Tibet to Nepal Overland Tour Itinerary 13 Days

Oct 22, 2025 11:44 By Lewis

Embark on a land journey from the world's highest plateau to the valleys, starting from Lhasa. Initially, you will be on the Tibetan Plateau, where you can enjoy the vast plateau scenery, such as continuous snow-capped mountains, vast grasslands, azure skies, and clear lakes. As the journey progresses and you gradually cross the Himalayas, the altitude keeps dropping, and you will eventually arrive in the plains of Nepal. You can personally experience the transition from the cold, high-altitude plateau environment to the warm and humid plain environment. This huge geographical contrast is hard to experience through other means of travel.

Brief Overview of Our Tibet to Nepal Overland Tour

Our 13 Days Kailash Pilgrimage - Gyirong - Kathmandu Small Group Tour is tailor-made for travelers who seek both a spiritually and physically rewarding trekking adventure and the opportunity to continue their journey into Nepal.

Day 1-3 Explore Tibetan Religion and Culture in Lhasa

These three days are dedicated to an in-depth exploration of Lhasa, taking you to the heart of Tibetan Buddhist culture through visits to the Potala Palace, Sera Monastery, Drepung Monastery, Jokhang Temple, and Barkhor Street. You will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the spiritual atmosphere, witnessing the rigorous monastic life and religious rituals, such as the lively debates among monks. Along the way, you can purchase traditional Tibetan handicrafts as mementos and savor the unique flavors of Tibetan cuisine, a symbol to the highland civilization. Highlight: The high altitude, massive scale, profound religious significance, and rich historical heritage of the Potala Palace make it a truly unique cultural landmark in the world.

Day 4-5 Stand Close to Mount Everest in Shigatse

On the journey to Shigatse, make a stop to visit Yamdrok Lake. Near the lakeshore, traditional Tibetan rural families welcome you with warmth, offering a delicious, authentic Tibetan lunch. Next, marvel at the imposing Karola Glacier, a stark reminder of Tibet's glacial heritage. Continue to Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city, where no visit is complete without exploring Tashilhunpo Monastery, the region's largest and most significant monastery. Wander its grand halls and towering statues of Buddha, immersing yourself in centuries of Buddhist tradition.

From Shigatse, journey to the Everest Base Camp, where you'll witness two unforgettable spectacles: the Golden Hour glow of the sun bathing Mount Everest's summit at dusk, and the crystal-clear night sky studded with stars above the "Roof of the World."

Highlight: Everest Base Camp offers unrivaled views and photography opportunities of the full Everest panorama with no strenuous trekking required, as comfortable vehicles transport you directly to this iconic vantage point.

Day 6-7 Enjoy Scenic Views of the Himalayas and Natural Grasslands in Ngari Region

After visiting Rongbuk Monastery, the world's highest monastery near Mount Everest, the journey continues toward the Ngari Plateau. En route, marvel at the serene Pekutso Lake and the majestic Mt. Shishapangma. Traverse a dramatic canyon formed by the Himalayas and the Gangdise Mountains, where rugged cliffs and winding rivers carve through the landscape. Pass through Ngari's pastoral highlands, where vast wetlands and grassland lakes glisten under the sun, offering glimpses of nomadic life and wildlife. As the journey unfolds, the iconic Mount Kailash comes into view, leading to the town of Tarchen at its base. Tarchen serves as both the starting and ending point for the Kailash Kora, a sacred pilgrimage circuit revered by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers.

Highlight: At Rongbuk Monastery, monks here live a life of devotion amid extreme altitudes, maintaining prayers and rituals that have endured for centuries.

Day 8-10 Overcome the Challenges of the Trekking Adventure around Mount Kailash

Day 8: Start in Tarchen Town, trek 13 km to Driapuk Monastery, passing meadows and streams. Overnight in monastery guesthouses, with sunset views of Kailash.

Day 9: Trek 24 km over Dolma La Pass, descend to Dzultripuk Monastery. This day will challenge you with the altitude of 5630 m but will reward you with unobstructed views of Kailash.

Day 10: Trek 12 km back to Darchen, winding through valleys and passing by Lake Manasarovar, and the Naimonanyi Peak.

Hightlight: The entire trekking process is wonderful. With gradual elevation gains, supported campsites, and optional mule support, this trek is designed to accommodate first-time high-altitude trekkers. Unlike more strenuous routes, this circuit balances physical challenge with moments of quiet reflection, allowing you to absorb both the mountain's raw beauty and its profound cultural significance. This trek comes to an end in Tarchen.

Day 11-13 Journey through the Forested Gyirong Vally on Your Way to the China-Nepal Border

As this journey draws to an end, after the arduous trekking, you will arrive at the picturesque Gyirong Vally, encircled by snow-capped mountains and lush forests. This region marks the lowest point in western Tibet. Here, you can explore the charming Jeep Village, and take a hike to the meditation cave of Padmasambhava. Finally, upon reaching the Gyirong Port, which is on the China-Nepal border, our guide will arrange a jeep to escort you from the Nepalese border to Kathmandu.

Conclusion

Note that this Tibet journey is closed from November to March each year due to harsh weather conditions. If you wish to embark on this adventure, act quickly! Contact our travel agency to customize your plan before the booking window closes.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April

Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.

Dear Shek, Thank you for reaching out and we are here to help. For Hong Kong residents that want to travel to Tibet, a Tibet Travel permit is not required, as long as you have the HKSAR passport, as well as the Home Return Permit (HRP). Officially known as the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, the HRP can be issued to Chinese nationals that are permanent residents of Hong Kong in order to enter mainland China. Cheers!

Is it open for Indian Passport Holder?

Answered by Tibet Vista

Dear Nayak, Thank you for reaching out! We're here to help. Well, for Indian passport holders who plan to visit Mt. Kailash, you have to book your Tibet tour with a licensed Nepali or Indian travel agency that is authorized by the Foreign Affairs Office of TAR or Pilgrim Center (also known as Tibet-India Pilgrim Reception Center) to get your Tibet Travel Permit and run your Tibet tour. If you are an Indian origin who lives outside of India and have another passport, let's say a US or Canadian passport, in this case, we can help you get the Tibet Travel Permit and other travel documents and arrange the Mt. Kailash tours for you.

The "Tibet Entry Permit" should be apply

I heard from my friend that says there is difference between the above mentioned are: "Individual Tibet Entry Permit" - Individual Entering Tibet is granted. "Group Tibet Entry Permit" - Anyone from the group is Absent, the whole group is deny entry. May I know which one is the correct facts?

Jun 15, 2024 11:12
Answered by Tibet Vista

Tibet Travel Permit, the required travel document for entering Tibet Autonomous Region, has no distinction between individual and group. . What your friends might have mentioned is the Group Visa, specifically required for entry into Tibet from Nepal. You'll have to apply for the Group Visa at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu, and you'll need at least four people in your group. You'll all have to enter and leave Tibet together. But if you're entering Tibet from mainland China, you don't need this group thing. Our travel consultant will contact you with more details and help you arrange your trip to Tibet.
