Trekking in Tibet focuses on religious atmosphere, grandeur, and highland wilderness, while trekking routes in Nepal feature diverse terrain changes, ranging from rainforest to desert.
May to October Is the Most Popular Trekking Season in Tibet
The most distinctive feature of the period from May to October is that it is far from the cold winter. Only when the physical sensation is relatively comfortable can tourists have sufficient energy to challenge themselves. During this period, even in Ngari Prefecture, the highest altitude area in Tibet, the daytime maximum temperature can remain around 15 to 22 degrees Celsius, and the nighttime temperature sometimes drops below 0 degrees Celsius.
Winter Is Not Suitable for Trekking in Tibet, But It Is Suitable for Trekking in Nepal
Take the most typical Everest Base Camp as an example. The temperature at night can drop below 15 degrees Celsius. Take trekking in Ngari Prefecture as another typical example. The average temperature during the day is between -5 and 5 degrees Celsius, and it can drop sharply to around -20 ℃ at night. Cold is one aspect, but it is also accompanied by bone-chilling winds, fewer supply points around, and increased difficulty in rescue operations, among other cruel facts. Compared with the coldness of Tibet in winter, Nepal is much milder. And since Tibet's winter is also the dry season in Nepal, Nepal can be an alternative choice.
Problems to Face When Trekking in April and November
The biggest challenge in choosing to go trekking in April or November does not come from the temperature, as one of these periods is when the weather is getting warmer and the other is still some distance away from the severe winter. The challenge is that pilgrimage treks to sacred sites like Mount Kailash are not currently open. Another point is that at this time, there are fewer group tour packages for trekking due to the small number of tourists going for trekking.
The Two Best Window Periods for Going Trekking in Tibet
Based on the period from May to October, May and October are two of the best golden Windows. These two months perfectly avoid the period with the greatest precipitation in Tibet throughout the year, which is from June to August. In May, the peak season has not yet arrived, so there are fewer tourists with more tranquil atmosphere. Moreover, as it is spring, everything comes back to life and the scenery becomes even more vibrant. In October, due to the dry air and higher visibility, one can better enjoy the panoramic view of the sacred mountain. The golden autumn scenery adds a unique beauty.
