Budget Tips for a Journey from Nepal to Tibet

Jul 23, 2026 5:35 By lewis

From Nepal to the Tibet Autonomous Region, it is a real journey that requires crossing the Himalayas. This kind of trips seems quite costly. In fact, it is not much different from the prices of other travel packages in Tibet. Here are some ways that you can control the cost of traveling.

Select an Affordable Tibet Group Tour Package

In terms of the number of days, I strongly recommend that choose an intermediate one, such as 7 to 8 days. This way, the trip won't be rushed and the package price can be kept within an acceptable range at the same time. At present, there are only two types of Tibet tour models. One is the group tour, where one tour guide and one driver lead no more than 12 tourists in a small group. Throughout the entire trip, you and your group members can be partners or even friends, traveling together by car between various scenic spots. Another type is the private customized tour, where you enjoy the service of both the tour guide and the driver all by yourself. However, since the latter is much more expensive than the former, budget-friendly options are always group tours. On the market, a diverse range of Tibet travel packages is available. While comparing prices from multiple sources, it is also necessary to be cautious of low-price traps.

Budget Tips for a Journey from Nepal to Tibet

Opt for the Economy Package Over Comfort

Our travel agency offers two options for each Tibet group travel package: one is the economy type and the other is the comfort type. We do this merely because the hotel budgets of different tourists vary. Frankly speaking, the two packages only differ in terms of hotel prices and quality, while all other available travel services are exactly the same. The hotels provided in the Economy Package are all around three-star hotels, which can fully meet the basic travel needs. 24-hour hot water, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, clean beds and modern facilities are all configurations. Speaking of the Comfort Package, it provides 4-star hotels that all come with oxygen systems. Restful nights and easier breathing guaranteed. Overall, the price difference between the Economy Package and the Comfort Package ranges from several hundred yuan. If you don't have a strong need for an oxygen-supplied room, the former is more than sufficient and money-saving.

Budget Tips for a Journey from Nepal to Tibet

Make the Most of Our Travel Agency's Transportation Service to Pick You up from Kathmandu to Tibet

You'll never believe how fast you can fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa: no more than 2 hours. Before you start searching for air tickets, let me tell you a cruel fact: There are only about three flights per week, and even in economy class, it costs several hundred dollars. It is currently the peak tourist season, and the one-way economy class ticket price has already started at 400 dollars. To be honest, you are able to travel across the border from Kathmandu to Tibet without spending a penny on transportation. The 8 Days Kathmandu to Lhasa Overland with EBC Tour provided by our travel agency includes land transportation services to pick you up from Kathmandu to the customs port and then into Tibet. Kathmandu is only over 100 kilometers away from the border crossing between Nepal and China. You can arrive on the same day you set off, and the next day will be the perfect time to start your Tibet tour.

Choose to travel from November to February

Between November and February, traveling to Nepal or Tibet reveals a special period that favors both destinations equally. First of all, from the perspective of Nepal, this period of time is the completely dry season, which fully guarantees that your trekking itinerary will not be disturbed by the rainy season. Now let's shift our perspective to Tibet. The lowest point of the annual travel package prices occurs during this period.

Lock in the Limited Discount Slots Several Months in Advance

Let me tell you a secret. Sometimes, our travel agency will follow the official tourism policies and offer a free service to upgrade economy travel packages to comfort travel packages. The number of such packages is very limited. Besides, our travel agency will also actively offer discounts to both new and old customers, and from time to time release some discounted prices, but only to tourists who make reservations in advance. After all, opportunities favor those who are well-prepared!

Conclusion

There are extra discounts waiting for you when you invite your relatives and friends. Why not come and ask?

Train booking

We are a group of 15 (perhaps 17) who need to take the June 8th 15:27 train from Xining to Lhasa. We need to book this soon so prompt reply would be helpful. We are getting our permits from an agent and should have them in 6-8 days.

Best time to travel for the Linka festival

Hey, I'm looking to travel to the Linka festival with my partner. When is the best time to go this year? Thanks!

Dear Guest,

Hope you are having a wonderful day! I was delighted to receive your inquiry about experiencing a Tibetan "Linka" with your partner.

Welcome to Tibet Tour Team! With over 20 years of experience in Tibetan travel, we have helped thousands of international travelers explore the beauty and culture of this incredible region. It would be my great pleasure to introduce you and your wife to Tibet and the unique tradition of "Linka."

In Tibetan, "Linka" refers to a park, grassland, or wooded area, while "guo Linka" means spending time there—eating, drinking tea, singing, chatting, and relaxing. It’s a beloved weekend or festive activity among Tibetans.

You asked about the best time of year to experience Linka.Let me walk you through the following aspects:

1. Best Season & Why

Linka is all about leisurely relaxing in meadows or wooded areas under the sun. For this reason, July and August are highly recommended. During these months, the weather is pleasant, the scenery is stunning, and you can enjoy ample sunshine, fresh air, and brilliant blue skies—perfect for fully immersing in the refreshing high-altitude atmosphere.

Additionally, August hosts the Shoton Festival, one of Tibet’s most important traditional celebrations. Locals typically enjoy about a week of holiday, during which residents of Lhasa gather in parks like Norbulingka and Zongjiao Lukang to set up tents, enjoy yogurt, sing, dance, and celebrate Tibetan outdoor culture. You’ll even get to try special Tibetan yogurt, which is deliciously tangy and sweet—in fact, “Shoton” means “yogurt feast” in Tibetan!

2. Recommended Itinerary

Considering your interest in Linka and the recommendation above, I am eager to suggest our specially designed 10-Day Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake, Shigatse & Everest Linka Tour during Shoton Festival. This is a one-time-only departure timed perfectly with the festival. The departure date for this itinerary is August 10th (this is the day you arrive in Lhasa).

More detailed information about the Lingka Festival tour itinerary and introduction has been sent to you by email. Please kindly check your inbox. Thank you very much.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April

Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.

Dear Shek, Thank you for reaching out and we are here to help. For Hong Kong residents that want to travel to Tibet, a Tibet Travel permit is not required, as long as you have the HKSAR passport, as well as the Home Return Permit (HRP). Officially known as the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, the HRP can be issued to Chinese nationals that are permanent residents of Hong Kong in order to enter mainland China. Cheers!

Is Kailash Mansarovar Trip open for Indian Passport Holder?

Is it open for Indian Passport Holder?

Jun 20, 2024 2:30
Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Nayak, Thank you for reaching out! We're here to help. Well, for Indian passport holders who plan to visit Mt. Kailash, you have to book your Tibet tour with a licensed Nepali or Indian travel agency that is authorized by the Foreign Affairs Office of TAR or Pilgrim Center (also known as Tibet-India Pilgrim Reception Center) to get your Tibet Travel Permit and run your Tibet tour. If you are an Indian origin who lives outside of India and have another passport, let's say a US or Canadian passport, in this case, we can help you get the Tibet Travel Permit and other travel documents and arrange the Mt. Kailash tours for you.

Dear Azmi, Thanks for your inquiry. A viable option is to fly from HK to Chengdu and later take Chengdu-Lhasa train to Lhasa.
