Which Is the Best Gateway City for Tibet by Train?

Apr 16, 2026 10:37 By lewis

When it comes to picking a starting point for Tibet train journey, there is no single "best" gateway city for every traveler. The right choice depends entirely on your travel timeline, where you're entering China, your personal interests, and what you want to get out of your trip. Below, I break down several major gateway city for trains to Tibet, with clear guidance on who each option fits best, and what you can explore in each city before you board the train to Lhasa.

Xining: The Official Start of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway

Xining is universally recognized as the true starting point of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, and it is the ideal pick for travelers with limited vacation time, or those who want to experience the most scenic stretch of the railway without a multi-day ride. Every single train bound for Lhasa passes through Xining, and the most iconic, visually stunning section of the entire route unfolds after the train leaves this city. Many international travelers choose to fly directly into Xining first, then board the train to Lhasa, a choice that cuts down total travel time significantly while still letting you soak in the full magic of the plateau railway. Before you depart, Xining and its surrounding areas offer plenty to fill a day or two of pre-trip exploration. You can visit the ancient Kumbum Monastery, one of the most important sites for Tibetan Buddhism outside of Tibet itself, or take a short day trip to Qinghai Lake, the largest saltwater lake in China, with sweeping views and quiet walking trails. This option is also extremely budget-friendly, with flexible train options and lower accommodation costs compared to larger gateway cities.

Beijing: The Classic Pick for First-Time China Travelers

Beijing, the capital of China, is the most popular gateway for international travelers visiting the country for the first time, and it fits perfectly for anyone with a longer holiday who wants to pair a deep dive into China's iconic landmarks with their Tibet travel. The city has daily departures for trains to Lhasa, so you won't have to wait around for limited departure dates, and it is exceptionally well-connected with international flights from every corner of the globe. Before you board the train to Tibet, you can fill your days with once-in-a-lifetime experiences: walking the Great Wall of China, exploring the Forbidden City, wandering the historic hutong alleyways, and visiting the Temple of Heaven. This route lets you build a comprehensive China trip, moving from the bustling heart of the country's capital to the serene, spiritual landscapes of Tibet, all in one seamless journey.

Chengdu: Perfect for Wildlife and Casual Culture Lovers

Chengdu is the go-to gateway for travelers who want to add a dose of charm, wildlife, and incredible food to their trip before heading to the plateau. It fits best for travelers who love casual, laid-back exploration, family groups, and anyone who wants to ease into their China trip with a fun, low-stress stop before the higher altitude of Tibet. The train ride from Chengdu to Lhasa is balanced in length, long enough to settle into the rhythm of train travel without feeling drawn out. Before you depart, Chengdu's biggest draw is the chance to see giant pandas up close at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, a bucket list experience for many international visitors. You can also dive into world-famous Sichuan cuisine, watch a traditional Sichuan opera performance, and wander the city's relaxed teahouses to get a feel for local life. It's the perfect way to build excitement for your Tibet trip while enjoying some of China's most beloved cultural experiences.

Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Xi'an: Gateway Options for Different Travel Interests

For travelers with specific travel plans or entry points into China, there are several more gateway cities that fit specialized travel needs perfectly. Shanghai, on China's east coast, is ideal for travelers entering China from East Asia, Europe, or North America, with an enormous number of international flights and daily departures for Lhasa-bound trains. It's a great fit for anyone who wants to experience the contrast between China's sleek, modern metropolis and the timeless culture of Tibet, with pre-trip stops at the Bund, Yu Garden, and nearby water towns. Guangzhou, in southern China, is the best choice for travelers arriving from Southeast Asia, Australia, or New Zealand, with shorter international flight times and regular train departures to Lhasa. Before your trip, you can explore authentic Cantonese cuisine, historic Lingnan architecture, and the city's vibrant night markets. Xi'an, meanwhile, is made for history lovers. It's home to the world-famous Terracotta Army, ancient city walls, and countless relics from China's imperial dynasties, making it the perfect stop to pair with Tibet's rich cultural history. While there are no direct trains originating in Xi'an, multiple daily routes stop here, letting you hop on board after exploring the city's historic treasures.

Best time to travel for the Linka festival

Hey, I'm looking to travel to the Linka festival with my partner. When is the best time to go this year? Thanks!

Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Guest,

Hope you are having a wonderful day! I was delighted to receive your inquiry about experiencing a Tibetan "Linka" with your partner.

Welcome to Tibet Tour Team! With over 20 years of experience in Tibetan travel, we have helped thousands of international travelers explore the beauty and culture of this incredible region. It would be my great pleasure to introduce you and your wife to Tibet and the unique tradition of "Linka."

In Tibetan, "Linka" refers to a park, grassland, or wooded area, while "guo Linka" means spending time there—eating, drinking tea, singing, chatting, and relaxing. It’s a beloved weekend or festive activity among Tibetans.

You asked about the best time of year to experience Linka.Let me walk you through the following aspects:

1. Best Season & Why

Linka is all about leisurely relaxing in meadows or wooded areas under the sun. For this reason, July and August are highly recommended. During these months, the weather is pleasant, the scenery is stunning, and you can enjoy ample sunshine, fresh air, and brilliant blue skies—perfect for fully immersing in the refreshing high-altitude atmosphere.

Additionally, August hosts the Shoton Festival, one of Tibet’s most important traditional celebrations. Locals typically enjoy about a week of holiday, during which residents of Lhasa gather in parks like Norbulingka and Zongjiao Lukang to set up tents, enjoy yogurt, sing, dance, and celebrate Tibetan outdoor culture. You’ll even get to try special Tibetan yogurt, which is deliciously tangy and sweet—in fact, “Shoton” means “yogurt feast” in Tibetan!

2. Recommended Itinerary

Considering your interest in Linka and the recommendation above, I am eager to suggest our specially designed 10-Day Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake, Shigatse & Everest Linka Tour during Shoton Festival. This is a one-time-only departure timed perfectly with the festival. The departure date for this itinerary is August 10th (this is the day you arrive in Lhasa).

More detailed information about the Lingka Festival tour itinerary and introduction has been sent to you by email. Please kindly check your inbox. Thank you very much.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April

Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.

Dear Shek, Thank you for reaching out and we are here to help. For Hong Kong residents that want to travel to Tibet, a Tibet Travel permit is not required, as long as you have the HKSAR passport, as well as the Home Return Permit (HRP). Officially known as the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, the HRP can be issued to Chinese nationals that are permanent residents of Hong Kong in order to enter mainland China. Cheers!

Is it open for Indian Passport Holder?

Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Nayak, Thank you for reaching out! We're here to help. Well, for Indian passport holders who plan to visit Mt. Kailash, you have to book your Tibet tour with a licensed Nepali or Indian travel agency that is authorized by the Foreign Affairs Office of TAR or Pilgrim Center (also known as Tibet-India Pilgrim Reception Center) to get your Tibet Travel Permit and run your Tibet tour. If you are an Indian origin who lives outside of India and have another passport, let's say a US or Canadian passport, in this case, we can help you get the Tibet Travel Permit and other travel documents and arrange the Mt. Kailash tours for you.

The "Tibet Entry Permit" should be apply

I heard from my friend that says there is difference between the above mentioned are: "Individual Tibet Entry Permit" - Individual Entering Tibet is granted. "Group Tibet Entry Permit" - Anyone from the group is Absent, the whole group is deny entry. May I know which one is the correct facts?

Jun 15, 2024 11:12
Answered by Tibet Tour team

Tibet Travel Permit, the required travel document for entering Tibet Autonomous Region, has no distinction between individual and group. . What your friends might have mentioned is the Group Visa, specifically required for entry into Tibet from Nepal. You'll have to apply for the Group Visa at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu, and you'll need at least four people in your group. You'll all have to enter and leave Tibet together. But if you're entering Tibet from mainland China, you don't need this group thing. Our travel consultant will contact you with more details and help you arrange your trip to Tibet.
