Tibet Travel Permit: Answers to Your Most Pressing Questions

Dec 19, 2025 11:37 By lewis

I've rounded up the most common and urgent questions foreign travelers ask, with straightforward, friendly answers to help you plan with confidence!

Is my Tibet Travel Permit a one-time pass or can I reuse it?

This is one of the most common questions we get. Once your journey concludes and you leave Tibet, the permit expires and cannot be used again for a future trip. If you find yourself captivated by Tibet and plan a return visit, you will need to go through the application process anew for each subsequent trip. The key takeaway is to ensure the dates on your permit cover your entire planned stay from entry to departure to avoid any complications at checkpoints.

Tibet Travel Permit: Answers to Your Most Pressing Questions

Can I travel with a large group, or is there a limit on the permit?

Absolutely, you can share the magic of Tibet with your loved ones. There is no official upper limit on the number of people for a single Tibet Travel Permit application. Whether you are a solo traveler seeking solitude, a couple on an adventure, or organizing a large family reunion or a dedicated photography tour with friends, the system can accommodate you. Everyone who meets the standard requirements can be included in the application submitted through a licensed Tibet travel agency. This flexibility is great news for those who want to experience Tibet's wonders together.

My plans changed! Can I tweak the dates or itinerary on my permit?

I understand that travel plans can sometimes need to shift. However, this is one of the most rigid aspects of the permit process. The travel dates, route, and listed attractions on your Tibet Travel Permit are officially recorded and approved based on the precise itinerary you provide during the application. Once it's printed and issued, the details are set in stone; no temporary modifications are allowed. This is strictly enforced at the numerous checkpoints you'll encounter. If your plans change significantly, your only recourse is to communicate with your travel agency well in advance to see if a reapplication is necessary. This is one of the key reasons why partnering with a responsive and experienced agency is so valuable—they can guide you through these situations smoothly. At our agency, we work closely with you from the start to craft a finalized itinerary that is both fulfilling and set in stone for the authorities, giving you complete peace of mind.

Where and when will my permit be checked?

Your permit is your essential companion from the moment you embark on your journey to Tibet. The first crucial check happens at your point of departure into Tibet. You must present your original, physical permit at the airport check-in counter for your flight to Lhasa or at the railway station before boarding the train. You cannot board without it. Upon arrival in Tibet, your guide will typically take custody of the permit for the group's safety and convenience. As you venture beyond Lhasa to incredible sites like Everest Base Camp, the holy lake Namtso, or the ancient city of Shigatse, you will pass through several official checkpoints. Your guide will present the permit at each of these stops. You won't be personally handling it at every checkpoint, but it is working hard for you in the background, ensuring your journey is seamless and uninterrupted.

Tibet Travel Permit: Answers to Your Most Pressing Questions

How many copies of this precious permit should I carry?

This is a very practical question. I strongly recommend you prepare at least two physical photocopies of your permit. Consider one as your primary copy and the other as a crucial backup in case one gets lost or, as sometimes happens, a staff member at a checkpoint retains a copy. Making copies is easy and inexpensive once you're in China; most hotel front desks offer copy services for a small fee, or they can direct you to a nearby print shop. A vital reminder: if you are flying into Lhasa, you must have the original permit, not a copy, to board your flight. The copies are for backup and secondary checks during your tour.

How long can I actually stay in Tibet with the permit?

The duration of your stay is clearly defined and tailored to your specific tour plan. Your permit will explicitly list your approved entry and departure dates. This creates a fixed window for your Tibetan adventure. While you are permitted to leave Tibet earlier than the scheduled departure date if needed, you absolutely cannot stay later. Overstaying your permit's validity can lead to serious complications.

Conclusion

With the right information and a trusted local team by your side, you're sure to enjoy your Tibet trip.

Best time to travel for the Linka festival

Hey, I'm looking to travel to the Linka festival with my partner. When is the best time to go this year? Thanks!

Feb 19, 2026 6:51
Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Guest,

Hope you are having a wonderful day! I was delighted to receive your inquiry about experiencing a Tibetan "Linka" with your partner.

Welcome to Tibet Tour Team! With over 20 years of experience in Tibetan travel, we have helped thousands of international travelers explore the beauty and culture of this incredible region. It would be my great pleasure to introduce you and your wife to Tibet and the unique tradition of "Linka."

In Tibetan, "Linka" refers to a park, grassland, or wooded area, while "guo Linka" means spending time there—eating, drinking tea, singing, chatting, and relaxing. It’s a beloved weekend or festive activity among Tibetans.

You asked about the best time of year to experience Linka.Let me walk you through the following aspects:

1. Best Season & Why

Linka is all about leisurely relaxing in meadows or wooded areas under the sun. For this reason, July and August are highly recommended. During these months, the weather is pleasant, the scenery is stunning, and you can enjoy ample sunshine, fresh air, and brilliant blue skies—perfect for fully immersing in the refreshing high-altitude atmosphere.

Additionally, August hosts the Shoton Festival, one of Tibet’s most important traditional celebrations. Locals typically enjoy about a week of holiday, during which residents of Lhasa gather in parks like Norbulingka and Zongjiao Lukang to set up tents, enjoy yogurt, sing, dance, and celebrate Tibetan outdoor culture. You’ll even get to try special Tibetan yogurt, which is deliciously tangy and sweet—in fact, “Shoton” means “yogurt feast” in Tibetan!

2. Recommended Itinerary

Considering your interest in Linka and the recommendation above, I am eager to suggest our specially designed 10-Day Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake, Shigatse & Everest Linka Tour during Shoton Festival. This is a one-time-only departure timed perfectly with the festival. The departure date for this itinerary is August 10th (this is the day you arrive in Lhasa).

More detailed information about the Lingka Festival tour itinerary and introduction has been sent to you by email. Please kindly check your inbox. Thank you very much.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April

Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.

Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Shek, Thank you for reaching out and we are here to help. For Hong Kong residents that want to travel to Tibet, a Tibet Travel permit is not required, as long as you have the HKSAR passport, as well as the Home Return Permit (HRP). Officially known as the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, the HRP can be issued to Chinese nationals that are permanent residents of Hong Kong in order to enter mainland China. Cheers!

Is Kailash Mansarovar Trip open for Indian Passport Holder?

Is it open for Indian Passport Holder?

Jun 20, 2024 2:30
Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Nayak, Thank you for reaching out! We're here to help. Well, for Indian passport holders who plan to visit Mt. Kailash, you have to book your Tibet tour with a licensed Nepali or Indian travel agency that is authorized by the Foreign Affairs Office of TAR or Pilgrim Center (also known as Tibet-India Pilgrim Reception Center) to get your Tibet Travel Permit and run your Tibet tour. If you are an Indian origin who lives outside of India and have another passport, let's say a US or Canadian passport, in this case, we can help you get the Tibet Travel Permit and other travel documents and arrange the Mt. Kailash tours for you.

The "Tibet Entry Permit" should be apply

I heard from my friend that says there is difference between the above mentioned are: "Individual Tibet Entry Permit" - Individual Entering Tibet is granted. "Group Tibet Entry Permit" - Anyone from the group is Absent, the whole group is deny entry. May I know which one is the correct facts?

Jun 15, 2024 11:12
Answered by Tibet Tour team

Tibet Travel Permit, the required travel document for entering Tibet Autonomous Region, has no distinction between individual and group. . What your friends might have mentioned is the Group Visa, specifically required for entry into Tibet from Nepal. You'll have to apply for the Group Visa at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu, and you'll need at least four people in your group. You'll all have to enter and leave Tibet together. But if you're entering Tibet from mainland China, you don't need this group thing. Our travel consultant will contact you with more details and help you arrange your trip to Tibet.
