Best Time to Visit Tibet
When is the best time to visit Tibet for a trip? This is the first thing most tourists consider when planning a trip to Tibet. Choosing an appropriate time will double the enjoyment of your trip. To answer this question, I won't give a general answer as different tourists have different priorities for their Tibet trips. Therefore, what’s your priority? This is a question you need to think about carefully, because you can’t do everything in a limited vocation and meanwhile, some landscapes are more stunning at specific times. Do you prefer trekking in Tibet or experiencing a Tibetan festival? Or, maybe you’re fond of the unique flora and fauna of Tibet. Really think about it. I’d like to offer different suggestions according to your priority.
To Trek in Tibet
The spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) in Tibet are the most suitable for trekking. Whether it's spring or autumn, you don't have to worry too much about the slippery road surface due to rain and snow. The average temperature in Tibet is between 10℃-20℃ during these periods. The air is fresh, and the visibility is high. You can enjoy the magnificent natural scenery during trekking.
To Visit Everest Base Camp
Usually, the best time to visit Everest Base Camp mainly ranges from April to June and from September to October each year, because the climate is suitable, and it's not easy to be affected by bad weather. If you want to see Everest Base Camp full with all the tents and action, April or May would be your first choice.
To Avoid the Crowds
Generally speaking, summer (July to August) is the peak season in Tibet tourism. On the contrary, if you are keen to visit Tibet during the off season, there is no doubt that you can enjoy the scenery more quietly and savor the tranquility and sanctity of Tibet from November to March of the following year. Besides, low prices and high discounts are offered, which is actually budget-friendly.
To Experience a Tibetan Festival
Saga Dawa Festival is one of the most important and grand festivals in Tibetan Buddhism, which falls on June 11th this year. This day, Tibetans express their profound respect and sincere belief in Buddha through various religious activities, such as spinning Tibetan prayer wheels, prostration, incense burning, and lamp offering. During this period, you can enjoy Tibetan opera performances with long history and unique artistic style, or sing and dance with Tibetans in parks and squares.
Shoton Festival, also called Yogurt Festival, will be held on the 23rd of August this year. You can make a lot of foreign friends at this festival and taste the best yogurt in the world.
To Photograph of the Starry Sky
The best time to photograph the starry sky in Tibet is mainly from October to April of the following year, especially in winter. The winter weather provides favorable conditions for photography. It is sunny, with little precipitation, clear skies, and thin clouds, which is conducive to observing and photographing the starry sky.
To Appreciate the Unique Flora and Fauna of Tibet
The summer temperature in Tibet is relatively high, and the precipitation is abundant. During this period, plants in alpine meadows and grassland areas grow lush and luxuriant. The rhododendron is a major characteristic flower in Tibet. They grow in the alpine areas at an altitude of 3000 - 5000 meters. In summer, rhododendrons bloom all over the mountains. In Tibetan, the meaning of "galsang flower" is happiness. The beauty of galsang flower spreads all over in Tibet when visiting Tibet in summer. The rich vegetation in summer provides sufficient food for herbivores. In summer, wild yaks and Tibetan antelopes are easier to be seen.
Conclusion
In fact, no matter when you choose to come to Tibet, there is always a unique scenery. In Tibet, beauty is everywhere, and what matters is a pair of eyes that are good at discovering beauty.
