Best Time to Visit Sera Monastery
Sera Monastery is one of the six main monasteries of the Gelug School and also one of the Three Great Monasteries in Lhasa, enjoying an extremely high religious status. Except for Sundays and special festivals, the debate at Sera Monastery starts punctually at 3 p.m. every day and lasts for about 1 to 2 hours. Compared with other monasteries that only hold debates during specific religious ceremonies or examination periods, the daily arrangements of Sera Monastery have greatly increased the success rate of tourists' chance encounters and visits.
Debating is the core assessment method for Gelug School monks to be promoted to higher education. The monks are engaged in genuine academic discussions and spiritual refinement. Their expressions are focused and their expressions are vivid. This non-performative sense of reality endows the activity with a profound spiritual appeal.
Sera Monastery is open all year round, but since the debating ground is located in the Debating garden to the north of the main hall of Sera Monastery, it is open-air. This is a small courtyard covered with crushed stones, surrounded by ancient trees on all sides. So if you choose to go there in cold or rainy weather, you may not have the best experience. Taking the climate into account, I would recommend visiting from May to October each year and entering half an hour in advance. This way, you can get a better viewing spot in the courtyard. The cliff behind Sera Monastery is located at the southern foot of the Sera Uzi Mountain and is an important part of the Lhasa Pilgrimage Route. It is renowned for its cliff carvings, sacred springs and panoramic viewing platforms. Climbing to the halfway up the mountain or the edge of the cliff at the summit, you can overlook the entire Sera Monastery and the urban area of Lhasa. In the evening, it is an excellent spot to capture the golden summit of the Potala Palace and the setting sun of the city.

Visit Sera Monastery during the Shoton Festival
During the Shoton Festival, a huge Thangka exhibition ceremony is held on the Buddha display platform in the northeast of Sera Monastery, which is a spectacular scene and the highlight of the festival. At this time, the temple gathers tens of thousands of believers and tourists. Although there are no daily debates, they can participate in traditional Tibetan opera performances, yogurt feasts and other core activities of the Shoton Festival, experiencing the most intense festive atmosphere of Tibetan Buddhist culture.

Visit Sera Monastery during the Sera Bengqin Festival
The Sera Bengqin Festival is a unique vajra empowerment festival of Sera Monastery. The host holds a vajra wrapped in golden silk and successively touches the heads of believers and tourists to bestow blessings, symbolizing the protection of the Buddha, Bodhisattvas and Dharma protectors. A large number of believers gather in front of the Guardian Deity Temple or the Ma Tou Ming Wang Hall to pay their respects to the Vajra and make offerings to pray for blessings in front of the huge Ma Tou Ming Wang Thangka. Similarly, it should be noted that there are usually no debating activities during this festival.

Conclusion
For tourists visiting Lhasa for the first time, the debate at Sera Monastery has always been a must-see event. Communicate with us to find the best weather for your Tibet trip.

Train booking
We are a group of 15 (perhaps 17) who need to take the June 8th 15:27 train from Xining to Lhasa. We need to book this soon so prompt reply would be helpful. We are getting our permits from an agent and should have them in 6-8 days.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
