Up-To- Date Tibet Train Journey Must-Know in 2026

Jul 16, 2026 5:40 By lewis

After receiving a pack of inquiries from foreign friends about Tibet train trips, I find that many tourists have insufficient understanding or even misunderstandings about Tibet trains. So I have summarized some train travel information that many tourists are confused about and present it in this article.

Foreign Tourists Can Smoothly Book Tibet Train Tickets through Official Online Platform

Even if you are far away from China, you can still log in to the official 12306 platform to register an account and enter your real information to purchase train tickets. This platform not only sells train tickets to and from Tibet, but also for all railway-related tickets across China. Please recognize this one platform. After all, there are some third-party platforms that claim to have ticket-grabbing channels, but their ticket-grabbing channels are not that reliable. You can either purchase tickets through the 12306 official website or by downloading the APP. In my opinion, I  the latter is much more convenient.

Alternatively, you can choose to buy tickets at the counter of the railway station, but it is very time-consuming and laborious. Train tickets go on sale 15 days in advance at a specific time (varies by railway station). If you don't purchase the ticket on time, there is a certain probability that you will miss the chance of your train journey, or lose the seat or time point you want. This situation will become even more severe during the peak season. So just enjoy the convenience brought by the Internet when purchasing Tibet train tickets.

It Is Completely Feasible and Reliable to Entrust the Purchase of Train Tickets to a Travel Agency

It is permitted to purchase train tickets on behalf of others, which means there is no rule that tickets can only be bought by oneself. In this way, you no longer need to worry about the time difference and have to rush to get tickets, nor do you need to be concerned about making mistakes in the procedures. Our travel agency can help you solve these problems.

The Soft Sleepers on the Train to Tibet Are Very Limited

To enable you to understand more accurately, I am telling you a fact that a train to Tibet has only two soft sleeper carriages and can accommodate a total of 64 passengers. It is now July, the peak tourist season. Departing from Xining, which has the highest departure frequency, there are about 8 trains per day on average. Our travel agency will do its best to help you book a soft sleeper if you like. However, no one can guarantee a 100% chance of getting a soft sleeper, unless you are very flexible about the travel time. In that case, the probability of getting a soft sleeper will increase to some extent. My suggestion is that if you are determined to get a soft sleeper, it is recommended to travel during the off-season or choose to take a train out of Tibet.

A Hard Sleeper Is a Cost-Effective And Balanced Choice

Choosing a hard sleeper is regarded as settling for the second best among some tourists. In my view, the truth of the matter is not just that. The hard sleeper is indeed not as spacious as the soft sleeper, nor is it like the soft sleeper compartment, which is a four-person private room with sliding doors. However, both the hard sleeper and the soft sleeper have public restrooms and share the same dining carriage. No matter which seat type you choose, you need to purchase the train food at your own expense on the train, and the supply source is also the same. The hard sleeper ticket price can be at least 30% lower than that of a soft sleeper, and the number of hard sleeper tickets available is several times that of soft sleeper tickets, making it more convenient to get tickets.

You Can Board the Train without a Physical Train Ticket

Before entering the railway station, you don't need to queue up for a long time to get your train ticket. With your original passport and your Tibet Travel Permit, you can board the train to Tibet smoothly. Of course, if you want to keep a memento, you can also go and get the train ticket. Just pay attention to whether your identity verification on the 12306 platform is passed or not. If not, you can still pass the verification online.

The Starting Point of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway Is Xining

You can take direct trains to Tibet from major Chinese gateway cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Chongqing. You should note the starting point of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is Xining, which means that all trains to Tibet have to pass through Xining. I want to tell you that the highland train scenery you have been longing for starts from Xining Railway Station.

Only During the Daytime Can You Witness the Beautiful Scenery of the Plateau on the Train

From Xining Railway Station to Golmud Railway Station, you can witness Qinghai Lake, the Gobi Desert in the Qaidam Basin and the Chaka Salt Lake. Then, From Golmud Station to the terminal station, Lhasa Railway Station, there will be a host of beautiful scenes waiting for you, such as the Kunlun Mountains, the uninhabited area of Kekexili, the Tuotuo River, the Tanggula Mountains, Cona Lake, and the Qiangtang Grassland.

Therefore, what you need to pay attention to is that the train you are taking passes through these scenic spots during the daytime; otherwise, it will be pitch-dark at night and you won't be able to see anything clearly.

Conclusion

Considering that every tourist's mode of transportation varies with their own departure points, the transportation costs and services to and from Tibet are not included in our Tibet travel packages. However, we are still willing to take on the responsibility of providing enthusiastic service to assist you or help you purchase train or plane tickets.

Train booking

We are a group of 15 (perhaps 17) who need to take the June 8th 15:27 train from Xining to Lhasa. We need to book this soon so prompt reply would be helpful. We are getting our permits from an agent and should have them in 6-8 days.

Best time to travel for the Linka festival

Hey, I'm looking to travel to the Linka festival with my partner. When is the best time to go this year? Thanks!

Dear Guest,

Hope you are having a wonderful day! I was delighted to receive your inquiry about experiencing a Tibetan "Linka" with your partner.

Welcome to Tibet Tour Team! With over 20 years of experience in Tibetan travel, we have helped thousands of international travelers explore the beauty and culture of this incredible region. It would be my great pleasure to introduce you and your wife to Tibet and the unique tradition of "Linka."

In Tibetan, "Linka" refers to a park, grassland, or wooded area, while "guo Linka" means spending time there—eating, drinking tea, singing, chatting, and relaxing. It’s a beloved weekend or festive activity among Tibetans.

You asked about the best time of year to experience Linka.Let me walk you through the following aspects:

1. Best Season & Why

Linka is all about leisurely relaxing in meadows or wooded areas under the sun. For this reason, July and August are highly recommended. During these months, the weather is pleasant, the scenery is stunning, and you can enjoy ample sunshine, fresh air, and brilliant blue skies—perfect for fully immersing in the refreshing high-altitude atmosphere.

Additionally, August hosts the Shoton Festival, one of Tibet’s most important traditional celebrations. Locals typically enjoy about a week of holiday, during which residents of Lhasa gather in parks like Norbulingka and Zongjiao Lukang to set up tents, enjoy yogurt, sing, dance, and celebrate Tibetan outdoor culture. You’ll even get to try special Tibetan yogurt, which is deliciously tangy and sweet—in fact, “Shoton” means “yogurt feast” in Tibetan!

2. Recommended Itinerary

Considering your interest in Linka and the recommendation above, I am eager to suggest our specially designed 10-Day Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake, Shigatse & Everest Linka Tour during Shoton Festival. This is a one-time-only departure timed perfectly with the festival. The departure date for this itinerary is August 10th (this is the day you arrive in Lhasa).

More detailed information about the Lingka Festival tour itinerary and introduction has been sent to you by email. Please kindly check your inbox. Thank you very much.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April

Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.

Dear Shek, Thank you for reaching out and we are here to help. For Hong Kong residents that want to travel to Tibet, a Tibet Travel permit is not required, as long as you have the HKSAR passport, as well as the Home Return Permit (HRP). Officially known as the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, the HRP can be issued to Chinese nationals that are permanent residents of Hong Kong in order to enter mainland China. Cheers!

Is it open for Indian Passport Holder?

Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Nayak, Thank you for reaching out! We're here to help. Well, for Indian passport holders who plan to visit Mt. Kailash, you have to book your Tibet tour with a licensed Nepali or Indian travel agency that is authorized by the Foreign Affairs Office of TAR or Pilgrim Center (also known as Tibet-India Pilgrim Reception Center) to get your Tibet Travel Permit and run your Tibet tour. If you are an Indian origin who lives outside of India and have another passport, let's say a US or Canadian passport, in this case, we can help you get the Tibet Travel Permit and other travel documents and arrange the Mt. Kailash tours for you.
