Professional Advice for Reliving Altitude Sickness when Traveling to Ngari

Jun 16, 2026 9:13 By lewis

The possibility of suffering from altitude sickness is indeed closely related to altitude. The average altitude of Ngari (4,500m) has deterred a considerable number of tourists, not to mention that the highest point of the Mount Kailash Pilgrimage reaches an astonishing 5,600 meters. I strongly oppose some tourists with average physical fitness choosing to go to Ngari Prefecture rashly. At the same time, I also hope that some tourists will not worry too much and miss the rare beauty in the world.

Professional Advice for Reliving Altitude Sickness when Traveling to Ngari

Preparations for Preventing Altitude Sickness before Going to Ngari Prefecture

You should carefully monitor and assess your health conditions, especially those with high blood pressure, heart disease and respiratory diseases, need to follow the doctor's advice. And I do not encourage tourists over 60 years old or those who are too young to visit Ngari.

Regarding medicines, rhodiola rosea needs to be taken 7 to 10 days before departure. If the doctor deems it suitable, take acetazolamide 24 hours before arrival. Dexamethasone is only for emergency use during the acute phase and must be used as directed by a doctor. Never abuse medication on your own.

Try to adjust your schedule, get enough sleep and avoid exhaustion 2 weeks ahead of time. Never underestimate the impact of psychological effects on physical health. Just maintain a good state of mind.

Carefully prepare your luggage. All items related to sun protection, wind protection, oxygen supplement and warmth should be complete. The supplies in Ngari Prefecture are limited and the prices are relatively high. Therefore, it is recommended to replenish the supplies in Lhasa and get them ready. Wind-cold is usually accompanied by altitude sickness. It is always essential to avoid catching a cold.

In terms of itinerary arrangements, even if you come to Tibet only for a trekking trip to Mount Kailash, don't let your Tibet itinerary only include the trip to Ngari. The consequence of rashly heading to the world's highest plateau is that your body cannot adapt to the drastic altitude changes. It is generally recommended that before going to Ngari Prefecture, you can arrange some trips in Nyingchi, Lhasa and Shigatse. This is not only beneficial to your health, but also makes your itinerary more colorful and comprehensive.

Essential Dos and Don'ts When Traveling in Ngari Region

A good timing of oxygen inhalation gets twofold results with half the effort, while a bad timing leads to the opposite results. Only inhale oxygen when altitude sickness symptoms such as dizziness, headache, shortness of breath, and accelerated heartbeat occur. If there is no obvious discomfort, regular oxygen inhalation is not necessary and dependence should be avoided. Blood oxygen saturation may be lower at night on the plateau, so oxygen inhalation before going to bed can improve sleep. If there is significant hypoxia after intense exercise, oxygen can be replenished for a short period of time.

Before you officially start your trek around Mount Kailash, you can pay porters and yaks in Darchen to help you reduce the burden of your luggage during the trek. After all, the better your physical condition is, the further away you will be from altitude sickness. However, when you want the luggage carrying service of the porters halfway through, it will be a bit difficult.

As for diet, drink plenty of warm water, avoid alcohol and smoking, and eat more easily digestible food. In fact, when you come to Ngari Prefecture, you will find that there are very few food choices here. Nevertheless, foods like noodles and butter tea are sufficient for you to eat to your heart's content and enjoy a good meal.

We are a group of 15 (perhaps 17) who need to take the June 8th 15:27 train from Xining to Lhasa. We need to book this soon so prompt reply would be helpful. We are getting our permits from an agent and should have them in 6-8 days.

Best time to travel for the Linka festival

Hey, I'm looking to travel to the Linka festival with my partner. When is the best time to go this year? Thanks!

Dear Guest,

Hope you are having a wonderful day! I was delighted to receive your inquiry about experiencing a Tibetan "Linka" with your partner.

Welcome to Tibet Tour Team! With over 20 years of experience in Tibetan travel, we have helped thousands of international travelers explore the beauty and culture of this incredible region. It would be my great pleasure to introduce you and your wife to Tibet and the unique tradition of "Linka."

In Tibetan, "Linka" refers to a park, grassland, or wooded area, while "guo Linka" means spending time there—eating, drinking tea, singing, chatting, and relaxing. It’s a beloved weekend or festive activity among Tibetans.

You asked about the best time of year to experience Linka.Let me walk you through the following aspects:

1. Best Season & Why

Linka is all about leisurely relaxing in meadows or wooded areas under the sun. For this reason, July and August are highly recommended. During these months, the weather is pleasant, the scenery is stunning, and you can enjoy ample sunshine, fresh air, and brilliant blue skies—perfect for fully immersing in the refreshing high-altitude atmosphere.

Additionally, August hosts the Shoton Festival, one of Tibet’s most important traditional celebrations. Locals typically enjoy about a week of holiday, during which residents of Lhasa gather in parks like Norbulingka and Zongjiao Lukang to set up tents, enjoy yogurt, sing, dance, and celebrate Tibetan outdoor culture. You’ll even get to try special Tibetan yogurt, which is deliciously tangy and sweet—in fact, “Shoton” means “yogurt feast” in Tibetan!

2. Recommended Itinerary

Considering your interest in Linka and the recommendation above, I am eager to suggest our specially designed 10-Day Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake, Shigatse & Everest Linka Tour during Shoton Festival. This is a one-time-only departure timed perfectly with the festival. The departure date for this itinerary is August 10th (this is the day you arrive in Lhasa).

More detailed information about the Lingka Festival tour itinerary and introduction has been sent to you by email. Please kindly check your inbox. Thank you very much.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April

Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.

Dear Shek, Thank you for reaching out and we are here to help. For Hong Kong residents that want to travel to Tibet, a Tibet Travel permit is not required, as long as you have the HKSAR passport, as well as the Home Return Permit (HRP). Officially known as the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, the HRP can be issued to Chinese nationals that are permanent residents of Hong Kong in order to enter mainland China. Cheers!

Is it open for Indian Passport Holder?

Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Nayak, Thank you for reaching out! We're here to help. Well, for Indian passport holders who plan to visit Mt. Kailash, you have to book your Tibet tour with a licensed Nepali or Indian travel agency that is authorized by the Foreign Affairs Office of TAR or Pilgrim Center (also known as Tibet-India Pilgrim Reception Center) to get your Tibet Travel Permit and run your Tibet tour. If you are an Indian origin who lives outside of India and have another passport, let's say a US or Canadian passport, in this case, we can help you get the Tibet Travel Permit and other travel documents and arrange the Mt. Kailash tours for you.
