Top Buddhist Monasteries to Visit on Your Lhasa to Mount Kailash Pilgrimage

Jun 8, 2026 9:06 By lewis

Spanning more than 1,300 kilometers, the Lhasa–Mount Kailash route journeys west from central Tibet, China. Traversing rolling highland hills, crystal-clear sacred lakes, and towering Himalayan snow peaks, it leads to the holy Mount Kailash, venerated by multiple religious traditions. En route, a mix of famous and secluded Buddhist monasteries allows you to split your trip into manageable stages, enriching your overall travel experience.

Top Buddhist Monasteries to Visit on Your Lhasa to Mount Kailash Pilgrimage

Samding Monastery: Spiritual Gem by Yamdrok Lake

Your first stop on the journey west from Lhasa should be Samding Monastery, a serene sanctuary perched on a 4,550-meter ridge overlooking Yamdrok Lake—one of Tibet's three sacred lakes and a top highlight of any Tibet tour. Located about 10 kilometers east of Nangartse, this monastery sits between two smaller lakes, with panoramic views of Yamdrok-tso's glittering turquoise waters and the snow-capped Kula Kangri and Gangkhar Phuensum peaks in the distance. Inside this monastery, you'll find a main assembly hall dominated by a statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, along with photos of the 11th and 12th Dorje Phagmo, a sacred conch shell, and a gold-painted footprint of the ninth Dorje Phagmo. Upstairs, several chapels house ancient artifacts and stone relics that survived the cultural revolution. For the best views, hike 45 minutes to the ridge-top cairns behind the monastery—you'll be rewarded with sweeping vistas of the three surrounding lakes and the Himalayas beyond.

Pelkor Chode Monastery: A Tapestry of Tibetan Buddhist Sects in Gyantse

As you continue west toward Shigatse, you'll pass through Gyantse, a charming town that's home to Pelkor Chode Monastery—one of the most architecturally stunning monasteries on the Lhasa to Mount Kailash route. Founded in the 15th century, this monastery is a rare example of unity between three major Tibetan Buddhist sects: Gelugpa, Sakya, and Kagyu. This harmony is reflected in its architecture, which blends different styles into a cohesive and breathtaking complex. The star attraction here is the Kumbum Stupa, a nine-story tower adorned with countless chapels, prayer wheels, and intricate murals that depict Buddhist teachings and stories. As you climb the stupa, each level reveals new artworks—vibrant paintings, detailed sculptures, and sacred artifacts—that offer a glimpse into the depth of Tibetan Buddhist art. Beyond the stupa, the monastery's prayer halls and meditation rooms exude a calm energy, where you can often hear monks chanting prayers or see local pilgrims prostrating in devotion.

Rongbuk Monastery: The Highest Monastery in the World, Near Everest Base Camp

As you push further west past Shigatse, your journey will take you toward Everest Base Camp, and along the way, you'll encounter Rongbuk Monastery—officially the highest monastery in the world, perched at an altitude of 5,150 meters. This remote monastery, located just 8 kilometers from Everest Base Camp, offers unparalleled views of Mount Everest's north face, making it a favorite stop for both pilgrims and photographers. Founded in the 1900s by a Gelugpa monk, Rongbuk Monastery has a modest exterior, but its interior is filled with sacred artifacts, including statues of Buddha, thangkas, and prayer flags that flutter in the mountain breeze. The monastery's main assembly hall is a simple yet powerful space, where monks gather daily for prayers and meditation. One of the best experiences here is waking up early to watch the sunrise over Mount Everest, casting a golden glow over the snow-capped peak—an unforgettable moment that perfectly combines nature's grandeur with spiritual peace.

Tholing Monastery: A Window into the Ancient Guge Kingdom

As you near the final stretch of your journey toward Mount Kailash, in Ngari Prefecture, you'll find Tholing Monastery—a historic gem that was the first Buddhist temple in Ngari during the reign of the Guge Kingdom. Founded in the 10th century, Tholing Monastery played a pivotal role in the second transmission of Buddhism into Tibet. Even after the collapse of the Guge Kingdom, Tholing Monastery remained an important spiritual center, preserving ancient texts and traditions for over 900 years. Today, the monastery's ruins tell the story of its rich history, with well-preserved murals that depict scenes from the Guge Kingdom, Buddhist myths, and the lives of revered monks. The main prayer hall houses a large statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, along with cherished relics.

Best time to travel for the Linka festival

Hey, I'm looking to travel to the Linka festival with my partner. When is the best time to go this year? Thanks!

Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Guest,

Hope you are having a wonderful day! I was delighted to receive your inquiry about experiencing a Tibetan "Linka" with your partner.

Welcome to Tibet Tour Team! With over 20 years of experience in Tibetan travel, we have helped thousands of international travelers explore the beauty and culture of this incredible region. It would be my great pleasure to introduce you and your wife to Tibet and the unique tradition of "Linka."

In Tibetan, "Linka" refers to a park, grassland, or wooded area, while "guo Linka" means spending time there—eating, drinking tea, singing, chatting, and relaxing. It’s a beloved weekend or festive activity among Tibetans.

You asked about the best time of year to experience Linka.Let me walk you through the following aspects:

1. Best Season & Why

Linka is all about leisurely relaxing in meadows or wooded areas under the sun. For this reason, July and August are highly recommended. During these months, the weather is pleasant, the scenery is stunning, and you can enjoy ample sunshine, fresh air, and brilliant blue skies—perfect for fully immersing in the refreshing high-altitude atmosphere.

Additionally, August hosts the Shoton Festival, one of Tibet’s most important traditional celebrations. Locals typically enjoy about a week of holiday, during which residents of Lhasa gather in parks like Norbulingka and Zongjiao Lukang to set up tents, enjoy yogurt, sing, dance, and celebrate Tibetan outdoor culture. You’ll even get to try special Tibetan yogurt, which is deliciously tangy and sweet—in fact, “Shoton” means “yogurt feast” in Tibetan!

2. Recommended Itinerary

Considering your interest in Linka and the recommendation above, I am eager to suggest our specially designed 10-Day Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake, Shigatse & Everest Linka Tour during Shoton Festival. This is a one-time-only departure timed perfectly with the festival. The departure date for this itinerary is August 10th (this is the day you arrive in Lhasa).

More detailed information about the Lingka Festival tour itinerary and introduction has been sent to you by email. Please kindly check your inbox. Thank you very much.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April

Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.

Dear Shek, Thank you for reaching out and we are here to help. For Hong Kong residents that want to travel to Tibet, a Tibet Travel permit is not required, as long as you have the HKSAR passport, as well as the Home Return Permit (HRP). Officially known as the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, the HRP can be issued to Chinese nationals that are permanent residents of Hong Kong in order to enter mainland China. Cheers!

Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Nayak, Thank you for reaching out! We're here to help. Well, for Indian passport holders who plan to visit Mt. Kailash, you have to book your Tibet tour with a licensed Nepali or Indian travel agency that is authorized by the Foreign Affairs Office of TAR or Pilgrim Center (also known as Tibet-India Pilgrim Reception Center) to get your Tibet Travel Permit and run your Tibet tour. If you are an Indian origin who lives outside of India and have another passport, let's say a US or Canadian passport, in this case, we can help you get the Tibet Travel Permit and other travel documents and arrange the Mt. Kailash tours for you.
