How to Travel from EBC to Namtso Lake

Jun 4, 2026 10:41 By lewis

After visiting Everest Base Camp at the foot of the world's highest peak Mount Everest, you may be curious about your next stop on your Tibetan adventure—and there is no better choice than Namtso Lake, one of Tibet's most sacred and breathtaking high-altitude lakes.

This trip links two of Tibet's most iconic natural landmarks, leading you through vast grasslands, secluded townships and sacred monasteries along the route. Traveling from EBC to Namtso usually takes 3 days, covering around 1,000 kilometers of diverse and spectacular Tibetan landscapes.

EBC to Shigatse: Farewell to Mount Everest

Your journey from EBC to Namtso starts with a day dedicated to saying goodbye to Mount Everest and making your way to Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city. The total distance for this leg is about 360 kilometers, and you'll spend roughly 8 hours on the road—don't let that sound daunting, though, because the scenery along the way is worth every minute. Rise early after a restful night at the guesthouse close to EBC, and witness the first rays of sunlight gilding Mount Everest. Its snow-covered summit blazes golden as the sun creeps above the horizon. After soaking in this magical view, head to Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world at an altitude of around 5,154 meters. From there, you'll drive through Dinggye County and Sakya County, making a stop at the Dinggye Xilin Viewpoint, an optimal place where you can admire the eastern face of Mount Everest and its neighboring peak, Lhotse. As you continue toward Shigatse, the altitude gradually drops from 5,200 meters at EBC to 3,600 meters in Shigatse, helping your body acclimate a little easier. By evening, you'll reach Shigatse, where you can relax with a delicious Tibetan song and dance dinner before checking into your hotel.

Shigatse to Bangor: Exploring Northern Tibet's Vast Beauty

To make your long journey to Namtso Lake more enjoyable, take time to soak in the expansive wilderness of northern Tibet along the way. Splitting the trip into smaller sections will help ease travel fatigue. As you leave Shigatse, you'll drive into the Tibetan Northern Grassland, a vast expanse of green that stretches as far as the eye can see, dotted with yaks and sheep grazing peacefully. Snow-capped mountains frame the horizon, creating a postcard-perfect backdrop that you'll want to photograph at every turn. Along the way, you'll have two wonderful stops to break up the drive: a natural hot spring and Siling Tso. The hot spring is the perfect chance to relax your legs after hours of sitting—soak your feet in the warm water and let the stress melt away. Siling Tso, Tibet's second-largest saltwater lake, sits at an altitude of 4,530 meters and covers over 1,865 square kilometers. If you're lucky, you might stumble upon a nomad's tent along the way—stop in to say hello, taste a cup of warm butter tea, and learn about their traditional way of life. By the end of the day, you'll reach Bangor County, ready to rest before the final leg of your journey to Namtso Lake. This day's journey spans about 550 kilometers and takes around 9 hours. Yet the reward will be more than worth it: tomorrow, you'll be greeted by the stunning first view of Namtso Lake.

Bangor to Damxung: The Final Stretch to Namtso's Doorstep

The third and final day of your journey covers 330 kilometers and takes about 6 hours, and it's the most exciting one yet—because you'll be getting up close to Namtso Lake. Start your day in Bangor and head toward the heart of Northern Tibet's lakes and grasslands, where you'll visit two incredible spots: Peikutso and the Holy Elephant Heavenly Gate. Peikutso is a stunning alpine lake with crystal-clear blue waters, surrounded by rolling grasslands and snow-capped peaks, making it a perfect photo stop. But the real highlight is the Holy Elephant Heavenly Gate, located on the northern bank of Namtso Lake. This natural rock formation resembles a giant elephant drinking water from the lake, and it's considered a sacred gateway by local Tibetans—legend says that passing through the "gate" formed by the elephant's trunk can wash away sins. After exploring the Holy Elephant Heavenly Gate, you'll drive along the eastern shore of Namtso Lake, where the turquoise waters sparkle in the sun and the Nyenchen Tangula Mountain tower in the distance.

Conclusion

Once your itinerary in Damxung comes to a close, the return journey to Lhasa is incredibly convenient, spanning approximately 200 kilometers and taking just around 3 hours by vehicle. Back in Lhasa, you can pick up right where you left off and continue your unfinished explorations. You may revisit iconic landmarks, wander the city's ancient streets, taste more local Tibetan flavors, or soak in the profound religious and cultural atmosphere of Lhasa at a leisurely pace.

Train booking

We are a group of 15 (perhaps 17) who need to take the June 8th 15:27 train from Xining to Lhasa. We need to book this soon so prompt reply would be helpful. We are getting our permits from an agent and should have them in 6-8 days.

Best time to travel for the Linka festival

Hey, I'm looking to travel to the Linka festival with my partner. When is the best time to go this year? Thanks!

Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Guest,

Hope you are having a wonderful day! I was delighted to receive your inquiry about experiencing a Tibetan "Linka" with your partner.

Welcome to Tibet Tour Team! With over 20 years of experience in Tibetan travel, we have helped thousands of international travelers explore the beauty and culture of this incredible region. It would be my great pleasure to introduce you and your wife to Tibet and the unique tradition of "Linka."

In Tibetan, "Linka" refers to a park, grassland, or wooded area, while "guo Linka" means spending time there—eating, drinking tea, singing, chatting, and relaxing. It’s a beloved weekend or festive activity among Tibetans.

You asked about the best time of year to experience Linka.Let me walk you through the following aspects:

1. Best Season & Why

Linka is all about leisurely relaxing in meadows or wooded areas under the sun. For this reason, July and August are highly recommended. During these months, the weather is pleasant, the scenery is stunning, and you can enjoy ample sunshine, fresh air, and brilliant blue skies—perfect for fully immersing in the refreshing high-altitude atmosphere.

Additionally, August hosts the Shoton Festival, one of Tibet’s most important traditional celebrations. Locals typically enjoy about a week of holiday, during which residents of Lhasa gather in parks like Norbulingka and Zongjiao Lukang to set up tents, enjoy yogurt, sing, dance, and celebrate Tibetan outdoor culture. You’ll even get to try special Tibetan yogurt, which is deliciously tangy and sweet—in fact, “Shoton” means “yogurt feast” in Tibetan!

2. Recommended Itinerary

Considering your interest in Linka and the recommendation above, I am eager to suggest our specially designed 10-Day Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake, Shigatse & Everest Linka Tour during Shoton Festival. This is a one-time-only departure timed perfectly with the festival. The departure date for this itinerary is August 10th (this is the day you arrive in Lhasa).

More detailed information about the Lingka Festival tour itinerary and introduction has been sent to you by email. Please kindly check your inbox. Thank you very much.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April

Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.

Dear Shek, Thank you for reaching out and we are here to help. For Hong Kong residents that want to travel to Tibet, a Tibet Travel permit is not required, as long as you have the HKSAR passport, as well as the Home Return Permit (HRP). Officially known as the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, the HRP can be issued to Chinese nationals that are permanent residents of Hong Kong in order to enter mainland China. Cheers!

Is it open for Indian Passport Holder?

Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Nayak, Thank you for reaching out! We're here to help. Well, for Indian passport holders who plan to visit Mt. Kailash, you have to book your Tibet tour with a licensed Nepali or Indian travel agency that is authorized by the Foreign Affairs Office of TAR or Pilgrim Center (also known as Tibet-India Pilgrim Reception Center) to get your Tibet Travel Permit and run your Tibet tour. If you are an Indian origin who lives outside of India and have another passport, let's say a US or Canadian passport, in this case, we can help you get the Tibet Travel Permit and other travel documents and arrange the Mt. Kailash tours for you.
