Sichuan vs. Yunnan: Tibet Access Routes Comparison
Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, sits in the fertile western Sichuan Basin only 500 metres above sea level. Its subtropical climate, fiery hot-pot culture and giant-panda bases make it one of China's most visited cities, while its role as the traditional starting point of the Sichuan–Tibet Highway also gives it the densest network of flights and the most reliable rail link to Lhasa. Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province, rests on the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau at 1 891 metres—a moderate elevation that already thins oxygen by roughly 20 %. The city enjoys spring-like weather year-round (average 15 °C) and serves as an ideal acclimatisation stop before ascending to the Tibetan Plateau. Both cities are popular international arrival points, yet they offer entirely different pre-Tibet experiences.

Air Routes
From Chengdu to Lhasa there are 10–15 direct flights daily, departing roughly every hour from 06:30 to 21:00. The 2.5-hour hop climbs quickly over the Hengduan Range, giving passengers dramatic window views of glaciated peaks before skimming the turquoise ribbon of the Yarlung Tsangpo River on final approach. Kunming supplies 3–5 daily non-stops to Lhasa, taking about three hours. Tickets are often 10–20 % cheaper during the November–April low season, making Kunming attractive for budget-minded travellers. A further bonus is Yunnan's geography: visitors can spend two or three nights in Shangri-La (3 300 m) to pre-acclimatise, then fly to Lhasa already adjusted to high altitude and save a day of rest on arrival.

Train Journeys: Slow Travel with Built-In Acclimatisation
Only Chengdu currently offers a direct rail link to Tibet. Train Z322 leaves Chengdu West every other evening, reaching Lhasa 34 hours later after joining the main Qinghai–Tibet line at Xining (2,261 m). Soft-sleeper, hard-sleeper and hard-seat options are available, and every carriage is equipped with continuous oxygen supply. The route crosses Qinghai Lake, the uninhabited Kekexili wilderness and the 5 072-metre Tanggula Pass, delivering what many travellers call "the most beautiful train ride on Earth." From Kunming, there is still no direct train to Tibet; passengers must transfer via high-speed rail to Chengdu, extending total travel time to about 45 hours—doable, but far less convenient.

Conclusion
Whether you choose Chengdu's panda-filled parks or Kunming's flower markets, both cities are destinations in their own right. plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
