How Tibet Tour Companies Handle Altitude Emergencies
When foreign tourists consult our travel agency about Tibet tours, we carefully screen and assess their suitability for traveling to Tibet. We will inquire about their medical history and do not recommend visitors with underlying health conditions such as heart disease, hypertension, or diabetes, as Tibet's high-altitude environment is generally unsuitable for these individuals. Additionally, we do not recommend Tibet travel for children under 6 years old or adults over 70 years old. For those over 70, if they still wish to travel, they must submit a recent and comprehensive health check report to ensure they can physically tolerate the journey, and submit a notification for Tibet trip to our travel agency. In this notification, travelers must declare that they have no specific medical history that could pose a risk in high-altitude conditions. They must also take full responsibility for their physical condition during the trip to Tibet. This step is crucial for us to provide the best possible care and assistance throughout the journey. What's more, tourists suffering from colds are advised to wait until they have recovered before entering Tibet. Our priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of all travelers by making these recommendations based on the unique challenges of Tibet's high-altitude environment.
Our travel agency meticulously designs all Tibet tour itineraries with a strong focus on altitude acclimatization. To ease visitors into the high-altitude environment, we initiate our trips either in Lhasa, situated at approximately 3,650 meters, or in the Gyirong Valley, which stands at around 2,800 meters. Prior to arrival, we guide travelers on preventive measures, recommending medications like Rhodiola rosea to mitigate altitude sickness risks. We underscore the importance of prevention, educating every guest about common symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and dizziness, and advising against activities that may exacerbate reactions including bathing within the first 2 to 3 days, engaging in strenuous exercise, and ensuring ample rest. Additionally, each tour vehicle is equipped with individual oxygen cylinders and first-aid kits for immediate support, ensuring a safe and comfortable journey through Tibet's majestic landscapes.
Our tour guides possess extensive high-altitude medical knowledge, thoroughly understanding the symptoms, causes, and preventive measures for altitude sickness, coupled with strong emergency response capabilities to act swiftly and calmly when guests experience discomfort. They are proficient in basic first-aid skills, ensuring preparedness for various scenarios.
During trips, guides maintain close vigilance over visitors' physical conditions. For mild altitude reactions such as headaches or dizziness, they promptly instruct guests to rest in place, avoid strenuous activities, and provide psychological reassurance to alleviate anxiety. They explain the body's adaptation process to high altitudes, helping visitors stay calm.
In cases of moderate symptoms, guides immediately administer oxygen through portable cylinders to relieve hypoxia, while continuously monitoring vital signs like blood oxygen saturation and heart rate. They adjust itineraries to prioritize low-altitude areas and ensure the comfort of affected travelers.
For severe conditions such as high-altitude pulmonary edema or cerebral edema, guides follow strict protocols: they immediately call emergency services, provide clear location updates and symptom descriptions to medical teams, and initiate first-aid measures while awaiting transport. Their training emphasizes rapid decision-making and seamless coordination with local healthcare systems, ensuring every second counts in critical situations.
Conclusion
We place the utmost emphasis on the health of our visitors. It is our greatest wish that everyone arrives in Tibet in good health and departs in the same condition.
