Shigatse Peace Airport: The Nearest Airport to the EBC

Mar 10, 2026 10:13 By lewis

The classic overland journey from Lhasa is a lengthy pilgrimage, a rite of passage for countless travelers. Yet for those mindful of time or yearning to dedicate every precious moment to the high Himalayas, a brilliant new gateway soars into the picture: Shigatse Peace Airport. Positioned as the closest airport to the Tibetan side of Everest Base Camp, it transforms access, saving invaluable time and effort for your ascent.

Getting to Know Shigatse Peace Airport

Located in Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city, the airport sits at an elevation of around 3,782 meters, making it one of the highest airports in the world. That altitude means you might feel a little lightheaded when you step off the plane, but don't worry—that's totally normal and a gentle introduction to the higher elevations you'll encounter at the EBC, which sits at over 5,200 meters. The airport is about 40 kilometers from Shigatse city center and 225 kilometers from Lhasa, but its real claim to fame is its proximity to the EBC: just 390 kilometers northeast of the base camp, it's closer than any other airport in Tibet. Unlike Lhasa Gonggar Airport, which requires a 2-day drive to reach the EBC, Shigatse Peace Airport gets you there in just 7 to 8 hours by car, letting you start your Everest adventure sooner. The airport itself is small but modern, with all the essentials you'll need—restrooms, cafes, and a few shops selling local souvenirs like Tibetan incense and handwoven scarves—so you can grab a snack and catch your breath before heading out.

Shigatse Peace Airport: The Nearest Airport to the EBC

Flights to Shigatse Peace Airport

While there are no international flights directly to Shigatse Peace Airport, getting there is easy thanks to direct flights from three major Chinese cities—all of which are well-connected to international hubs. This means you can fly into Chengdu, Chongqing, or Xi'an from your home country, then take a short domestic flight to Shigatse. The flight schedules are convenient, especially during the peak Tibet travel season from April to October, when the weather is clear and perfect for viewing Mount Everest. I always recommend booking your flight at least a month in advance during peak season—tickets sell out fast, and you'll get the best prices that way.

From Shigatse Peace Airport to EBC: The Scenic Tibetan Journey You Won't Want to Miss

Once you land at Shigatse Peace Airport, the journey to the EBC is part of the adventure—don't rush it, because the views along the way are some of the most breathtaking you'll ever see. The route follows the famous G318 Highway, known as China's most scenic road, and takes about 7 to 8 hours by car. If you book with our Tibet travel agency, we'll arrange a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle with an experienced driver who knows the road well and can stop at all the best viewpoints. The drive takes you through Shigatse city first, where you can catch a glimpse of local life, then through vast Tibetan plateaus dotted with yaks and nomadic tents, and past charming Tibetan villages where locals wave as you pass. One of the highlights is the Gawula Pass, where you can see four of the world's eight-thousander mountains in one view—Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. As you get closer to the EBC, the landscape becomes more dramatic, with snow-capped peaks towering above you and the air growing crisper. If you're worried about altitude sickness, I recommend breaking the journey with an overnight stay in Shigatse city—this gives your body time to acclimate and makes the rest of the drive much easier. Trust me, this journey is worth every minute; it's the perfect way to ease into the magic of the Everest region.

Beyond EBC: Unmissable Attractions Near Shigatse Peace Airport

While the EBC is the star of the show, there are plenty of other amazing attractions near Shigatse Peace Airport that you can add to your itinerary to make your Tibet tour even more memorable. Just a 1-hour drive from the airport is Tashilhunpo Monastery, one of Tibet's most important Buddhist monasteries. With its golden roofs, intricate murals, and peaceful courtyards, it's a beautiful place to learn about Tibetan Buddhism and escape the crowds. Another must-visit is Sakya Monastery, about 130 kilometers west of Shigatse, famous for its massive collection of ancient Buddhist scriptures and artwork. It's the main monastery of the Sakyapa Sect of Tibetan Buddhism and offers a fascinating glimpse into Tibet's religious history. If you have extra time, you can also visit Pelkhor Choede Monastery in Gyantse, about 100 kilometers east of Shigatse, which is unique for blending three different Buddhist sects and features the stunning Kumbum Stupa with 108 chapels. All of these attractions are easy to add to your EBC trip, and our team can help you plan the perfect itinerary that fits your schedule.

Conclusion

Finally, if you want to skip the stress of planning flights, permits, and transportation, our Tibet travel agency is here to help. We specialize in personalized Tibet tour packages that include everything from your flight to Shigatse to your transfer to the EBC, plus experienced local guides and professional drivers.

Best time to travel for the Linka festival

Hey, I'm looking to travel to the Linka festival with my partner. When is the best time to go this year? Thanks!

Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Guest,

Hope you are having a wonderful day! I was delighted to receive your inquiry about experiencing a Tibetan "Linka" with your partner.

Welcome to Tibet Tour Team! With over 20 years of experience in Tibetan travel, we have helped thousands of international travelers explore the beauty and culture of this incredible region. It would be my great pleasure to introduce you and your wife to Tibet and the unique tradition of "Linka."

In Tibetan, "Linka" refers to a park, grassland, or wooded area, while "guo Linka" means spending time there—eating, drinking tea, singing, chatting, and relaxing. It’s a beloved weekend or festive activity among Tibetans.

You asked about the best time of year to experience Linka.Let me walk you through the following aspects:

1. Best Season & Why

Linka is all about leisurely relaxing in meadows or wooded areas under the sun. For this reason, July and August are highly recommended. During these months, the weather is pleasant, the scenery is stunning, and you can enjoy ample sunshine, fresh air, and brilliant blue skies—perfect for fully immersing in the refreshing high-altitude atmosphere.

Additionally, August hosts the Shoton Festival, one of Tibet’s most important traditional celebrations. Locals typically enjoy about a week of holiday, during which residents of Lhasa gather in parks like Norbulingka and Zongjiao Lukang to set up tents, enjoy yogurt, sing, dance, and celebrate Tibetan outdoor culture. You’ll even get to try special Tibetan yogurt, which is deliciously tangy and sweet—in fact, “Shoton” means “yogurt feast” in Tibetan!

2. Recommended Itinerary

Considering your interest in Linka and the recommendation above, I am eager to suggest our specially designed 10-Day Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake, Shigatse & Everest Linka Tour during Shoton Festival. This is a one-time-only departure timed perfectly with the festival. The departure date for this itinerary is August 10th (this is the day you arrive in Lhasa).

More detailed information about the Lingka Festival tour itinerary and introduction has been sent to you by email. Please kindly check your inbox. Thank you very much.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April

Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.

Dear Shek, Thank you for reaching out and we are here to help. For Hong Kong residents that want to travel to Tibet, a Tibet Travel permit is not required, as long as you have the HKSAR passport, as well as the Home Return Permit (HRP). Officially known as the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, the HRP can be issued to Chinese nationals that are permanent residents of Hong Kong in order to enter mainland China. Cheers!

Is it open for Indian Passport Holder?

Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Nayak, Thank you for reaching out! We're here to help. Well, for Indian passport holders who plan to visit Mt. Kailash, you have to book your Tibet tour with a licensed Nepali or Indian travel agency that is authorized by the Foreign Affairs Office of TAR or Pilgrim Center (also known as Tibet-India Pilgrim Reception Center) to get your Tibet Travel Permit and run your Tibet tour. If you are an Indian origin who lives outside of India and have another passport, let's say a US or Canadian passport, in this case, we can help you get the Tibet Travel Permit and other travel documents and arrange the Mt. Kailash tours for you.

The "Tibet Entry Permit" should be apply

I heard from my friend that says there is difference between the above mentioned are: "Individual Tibet Entry Permit" - Individual Entering Tibet is granted. "Group Tibet Entry Permit" - Anyone from the group is Absent, the whole group is deny entry. May I know which one is the correct facts?

Jun 15, 2024 11:12
Answered by Tibet Tour team

Tibet Travel Permit, the required travel document for entering Tibet Autonomous Region, has no distinction between individual and group. . What your friends might have mentioned is the Group Visa, specifically required for entry into Tibet from Nepal. You'll have to apply for the Group Visa at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu, and you'll need at least four people in your group. You'll all have to enter and leave Tibet together. But if you're entering Tibet from mainland China, you don't need this group thing. Our travel consultant will contact you with more details and help you arrange your trip to Tibet.
