Nagqu Railway Station: Gateway to Tibet's Wild North
Every passenger train traveling to Tibet from mainland China makes a scheduled stop at Nagqu Railway Station, as do all outbound trains from Lhasa to the rest of China. It is located in Mendi Village, just 8 kilometers from the center of Nagqu Town, 322 kilometers northeast of Lhasa, and 820 kilometers southwest of Golmud in Qinghai Province.
Train Routes to and from Nagqu Railway Station
Traveling to and from Nagqu by train is straightforward and accessible, with options to suit every travel plan. All direct trains to Lhasa from major mainland Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Lanzhou, and Xining, stop at Nagqu Railway Station, so you can book a ticket directly to Nagqu from any of these cities if you want to start your Tibet tour in northern Tibet. The shortest journey to Nagqu is from Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province, which takes around 17 hours, while longer routes from cities like Guangzhou can take nearly 49 hours. If you prefer to acclimatize to the plateau's altitude first, you can start your trip in Lhasa, where the altitude is lower at 3,650 meters, and take a short train ride to Nagqu. There are 5 to 6 daily trains running between Lhasa and Nagqu, with a travel time of just 3.5 hours, making this a quick, comfortable, and affordable way to reach northern Tibet without the stress of a long road journey. Ticket prices for this short route are budget-friendly, with both hard and soft sleeper options available to suit different travel preferences.

Altitude Changes and Onboard Support for High Altitude Travel
One of the biggest concerns for travelers on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is adjusting to the high altitude, and the route to Nagqu is designed to make this transition as smooth as possible. After the train departs Golmud, which sits at 2,780 meters above sea level, the elevation gradually rises as it crosses the Kunlun Mountains, then climbs to the highest point of the entire railway at Tanggula Mountain Pass, which reaches 5,231 meters above sea level. From there, the elevation slowly descends to 4,513 meters when the train pulls into Nagqu Railway Station, before continuing down to 3,650 meters when it arrives in Lhasa. You do not need to worry about altitude sickness during the journey, as every train on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is equipped with a comprehensive oxygen supply system. The system activates automatically after the train passes Golmud, with oxygen outlets available in every sleeper berth and along the train corridors to keep the air comfortable and reduce the risk of altitude-related discomfort. This makes the train journey one of the safest and most gentle ways to acclimatize to the Tibetan plateau's high altitude.

Unmissable Scenic Highlights Along the Rail Route to Nagqu
The train journey to Nagqu is not just a way to reach your destination; it is also one of the most scenic parts of any Tibet tour, with panoramic views of the Tibetan plateau's most iconic landscapes right from your train window. Shortly after leaving Golmud, the flat plains of the Qaidam Basin give way to the rugged, snow-capped peaks of the Kunlun Mountains, one of the most sacred mountain ranges in Tibetan culture. Further along the route, the train passes through the eastern edge of the Hoh Xil Nature Reserve, a vast protected wilderness that is home to rare plateau wildlife including Tibetan antelopes, Tibetan wild donkeys, and wild yaks. After crossing Tanggula Mountain Pass, the train passes Cuona Lake, a stunning high-altitude lake that sits just tens of meters meters from the railway line, making it the closest lake to the entire Qinghai-Tibet Railway. The bright blue waters of the lake, backed by rolling grasslands, are a breathtaking sight for every traveler on board.

Conclusion
Boundless grasslands stretch to the far horizon, thousands of glistening alpine lakes dot the vast plateau, towering snow-capped mountains rise in solemn grandeur, and the headwaters of Asia's mightiest rivers take everyone's first breath here—this is Nagqu.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
