Must-visit Monasteries in Shannan: Explore Tibet's Deep Spirits
I'll introduce you to four must-visit monasteries, each with its own unique story, architecture, and charm—explaining exactly why they're worth adding to your Tibet itinerary.
Samye Monastery: Tibet's First Buddhist Monastery
Founded in the 8th century during the reign of King Trisong Detsen, it is the first proper Buddhist monastery ever built in Tibet—a landmark moment that brought Buddhism to the region and shaped its culture for centuries. The entire monastery is designed to resemble the universe, with the main temple at the center representing Mount Meru, the sacred mountain at the heart of Buddhist cosmology, and smaller temples and chapels surrounding it like the sun, moon, and stars. As you walk through its courtyards, you'll notice a mix of architectural styles—Tibetan, Chinese, and Indian—reflecting the diverse influences that shaped early Tibetan Buddhism. The main hall stands tall with its red walls and golden roof, housing ancient statues, intricate murals, and sacred scriptures that date back hundreds of years. It's also surrounded by beautiful scenery, with the Yarlung Tsangpo River flowing nearby and mountains in the distance, making it a perfect spot to slow down and soak in the serenity of Shannan.

Yungbulakang Palace: The First Palace in Tibet
While Yungbulakang is often called a palace, it's also a sacred monastery with deep spiritual significance—and it holds the title of the first palace ever built in Tibet. Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Yarlung Valley, this ancient structure dates back to the 2nd century BCE, when it was built for Nyatri Tsenpo, the first king of Tibet. Over the centuries, it evolved into a monastery, blending royal history with Buddhist spirituality, and it remains one of the most important sites in Shannan. As you climb the stone steps to the palace, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the lush Yarlung Valley, often called the "birthplace of Tibetan civilization" for its fertile lands and ancient settlements. Inside, the palace is filled with historic artifacts, including ancient statues of the Buddha, murals depicting Tibetan kings and Buddhist legends, and sacred relics that tell the story of Tibet's early history. The hilltop location also makes it a great spot to watch the sunrise or sunset, when the valley glows in golden light and the mountains in the distance take on a warm hue.

Mindroling Monastery: A Center of Tibetan Buddhism's Nyingma Sect
For travelers looking to explore a different branch of Tibetan Buddhism, Mindroling Monastery is a must-visit. Founded in the 17th century, it is one of the six major monasteries of the Nyingma Sect, the oldest school of Tibetan Buddhism, and it has long been a center of learning, art, and spirituality. The monastery is famous for its stunning architecture, including a large main hall with intricate carvings, colorful murals, and a massive statue of Padmasambhava—one of the most important figures in Nyingma Buddhism. It's also home to a renowned scriptorium, where monks still hand-copy sacred scriptures using traditional methods, and a printing house that produces ancient Buddhist texts and thangkas.

Conclusion
These temples mentioned above are usually not included in standard Tibet tour packages. Most regular itineraries focus only on famous landmarks, missing these hidden and culturally significant sites. That's why you need a professional local partner like our travel service. We specialize in customized private itineraries, taking you off the beaten path to explore authentic history, art and spirituality. Let us design a unique, smooth and meaningful journey for you.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
