Lhasa Railway: Epic Scenic Train Journeys Across Tibet
In fact, you can not only take trains to and from Tibet, but also make the most of Lhasa's rail network to explore other destinations across the region. As Tibet's capital, Lhasa serves as the central hub of Tibet's expanding railway system, linking you to iconic spots including Shigatse, Nyingchi, and eventually even Nepal.
Lhasa to Shigatse: A Quick Trip to Tibet's Second Largest City
Once you've explored the temples and alleyways of Lhasa, the next chapter of your Tibetan adventure beckons. In just under three hours, you can travel between these two cultural capitals. After leaving Lhasa, the train follows the serpentine curves of the Yarlung Tsangpo River, the lifeline of Tibet. You'll watch as the arid valleys gradually give way to the fertile, golden fields, dotted with traditional white-walled farmhouses. The efficiency of this high-speed connection means you can have a morning visit to the Potala Palace, enjoy a relaxed lunch, and still arrive in Shigatse with plenty of time to visit the magnificent Tashilhunpo Monastery in the afternoon light. It effortlessly connects the dots on your cultural tour of central Tibet.

Lhasa to Nyingchi: A Journey to Tibet's Garden
For a completely different scenic experience, the Lhasa to Nyingchi bullet train is the way to go. There are two trains running each day from Lhasa to Nyingchi: You'll pass by the Nyang River, its waters clear and calm, and catch glimpses of the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world, filled with colorful plants and flowers. The scenery changes with the seasons too: in spring, the hills are covered in pink peach blossoms and red azaleas, while summer brings lush forests and wildflowers that paint the landscape in every shade of green. This train ride is perfect for nature lovers, and it's a great way to see a different side of Tibet—one that's softer and more verdant than the arid plateau you might expect, and the whole journey generally takes about 3 to 5 hours.

Under Construction: Lhasa to Kathmandu Railway
While the Lhasa-Shigatse and Lhasa-Nyingchi lines are already up and running, there's an exciting new railway in the works that will connect Lhasa to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. This line will extend from Shigatse to Gyirong, a border town between Tibet and Nepal, and then on to Kathmandu, covering a total of around 700 kilometers. Construction on the Shigatse-Gyirong section is expected to start soon, and once it's complete, it will cut travel time between Lhasa and Kathmandu from the current 2 days by road down to just a few hours by train. Once the Lhasa-Kathmandu railway is complete, it will join the existing lines to create a truly connected network that makes exploring Tibet and its neighbors easier than ever.

Conclusion
What's more, returning to Lhasa from Nyingchi or Shigatse is just as convenient. Which train route will you choose? Our travel agency offers Tibet tour packages that include scenic rail journeys between these iconic destinations. Feel free to contact us for more details!

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
