Top Tibet Attractions to Explore in October

Jul 15, 2026 5:29 By lewis

October is a very popular choice for the general public. The temperature is in a balanced state of cold and hot, the climate is dry with little rain, and the cold wind has not yet arrived. Tourists of all ages and types can choose to visit Tibet in October.

Head to Nyingchi to Experience the Autumn Atmosphere

As Nyingchi is located at the lowest altitude region of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the climate here is mild and the vegetation is lush. It is precisely for this reason that the vegetation here can better display the colors of autumn, golden and brilliant.

Lulang Forest

In October, Lulang Forest is a golden ocean. The alpine meadows and vast forests, which are originally dressed in green and undulating continuously in summer, are all dyed golden, orange and fiery red at this time. The golden ocean alone is not enough. The The meandering streams, the snow-capped mountains in the distance, herds of cattle and sheep, scattered traditional villages and the deep blue sky complement each other, creating an even more beautiful scene.

Basum Tso Lake

In October, the weather at Basum Tso Lake is stable. The lake surface is as calm as a mirror, reflecting all the surrounding beauty. The glowing peaks that never melt, the birch forests that are ablaze with color, and the rich distribution of wild animals and plants make this place seem like a secret paradise on earth. There are several light hiking trails here that can be completed on the same day, making them very suitable for tourists of all ages.

Journey to Lhasa to Experience the Autumn Charm of the Sunlight City

Lhasa is a tourist city suitable for all year round because its core attractions are mostly monasteries. No matter how the seasons change, their sacredness, solemnity and grandeur remain unchanged. If you choose to visit in the middle and late October when the number of tourists decreases, you can better feel the tranquility and purity of this atmosphere.

The Potala Palace

After the National Day holiday, there are no longer long queues at the ticket gates of the Potala Palace. When you enjoy various cultural treasures inside, you can calm down more. It will also become effortless for you to capture all kinds of light and angles you want in the Potala Palace Square.

Jokhang Temple And Barkhor Street

Away from the hustle and bustle of tourists, come to the kora path on Barkhor Street and follow believers who devoutly hold prayer wheels and turn the prayer clockwise. At this time, the temperature throughout Lhasa is just right, with the average daytime temperature ranging from 15 to 20 degrees Celsius. Whether you want to have some outdoor activities or enter the Jokhang Temple to watch some ceremonies and ceremonies, the weather is perfect.

Venture to High-Altitude Regions to Capture the Breathtaking Scenery

After you adapt to the plateau environment in the urban area, you can set off for the high-altitude regions to see those natural wonders that require a bit of hardship to witness. Both Yamdrok Lake and Namtso Lake are at least one or two hundred kilometers away from Lhasa, thus taking several hours to get there by car. When you arrive, you will be amazed that such natural and unadorned beauty is indeed far from the city.

Tourists who are worried about the cold in winter must seize the window of October. After the end of October, the tents in the tent camps at the Everest Base Camp will be removed, some supply points will also be evacuated, and the post office at the highest altitude will be closed. Preparations for winter will begin, so it's best for you to visit the Everest Base Camp before the end of October to get a close look at Mount Everest. At this time, the highest temperature during the day can still reach around 10 degrees Celsius, and the lowest temperature at night can drop to as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius. Although there are some challenges, it is still within a range that most tourists can tolerate.

Make Your Way to Ngari Prefecture

As an ordinary tourist, you can basically give up the idea of going to Ngari Prefecture in winter. Due to the influence of extreme weather, many travel agencies do not organize tours to Ngari Prefecture for safety reasons. October is your last chance of the year. Otherwise, you will have to wait until Mount Kailash is opened in April of the following spring for a trek. In October, the kora path around Mount Kailash, the Guge Kingdom, Tholing Monastery and Dongga Piyang ruins are all waving to you with a welcoming gesture.

Conclusion

There are only a little over two months left until October. Due to the existence of Tibet Travel Permit, I always suggest booking your Tibet trip at least one month in advance. For the remote Ngari Prefecture, it's best to have more leeway ahead of time.

We are a group of 15 (perhaps 17) who need to take the June 8th 15:27 train from Xining to Lhasa. We need to book this soon so prompt reply would be helpful. We are getting our permits from an agent and should have them in 6-8 days.

Best time to travel for the Linka festival

Hey, I'm looking to travel to the Linka festival with my partner. When is the best time to go this year? Thanks!

Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Guest,

Hope you are having a wonderful day! I was delighted to receive your inquiry about experiencing a Tibetan "Linka" with your partner.

Welcome to Tibet Tour Team! With over 20 years of experience in Tibetan travel, we have helped thousands of international travelers explore the beauty and culture of this incredible region. It would be my great pleasure to introduce you and your wife to Tibet and the unique tradition of "Linka."

In Tibetan, "Linka" refers to a park, grassland, or wooded area, while "guo Linka" means spending time there—eating, drinking tea, singing, chatting, and relaxing. It’s a beloved weekend or festive activity among Tibetans.

You asked about the best time of year to experience Linka.Let me walk you through the following aspects:

1. Best Season & Why

Linka is all about leisurely relaxing in meadows or wooded areas under the sun. For this reason, July and August are highly recommended. During these months, the weather is pleasant, the scenery is stunning, and you can enjoy ample sunshine, fresh air, and brilliant blue skies—perfect for fully immersing in the refreshing high-altitude atmosphere.

Additionally, August hosts the Shoton Festival, one of Tibet’s most important traditional celebrations. Locals typically enjoy about a week of holiday, during which residents of Lhasa gather in parks like Norbulingka and Zongjiao Lukang to set up tents, enjoy yogurt, sing, dance, and celebrate Tibetan outdoor culture. You’ll even get to try special Tibetan yogurt, which is deliciously tangy and sweet—in fact, “Shoton” means “yogurt feast” in Tibetan!

2. Recommended Itinerary

Considering your interest in Linka and the recommendation above, I am eager to suggest our specially designed 10-Day Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake, Shigatse & Everest Linka Tour during Shoton Festival. This is a one-time-only departure timed perfectly with the festival. The departure date for this itinerary is August 10th (this is the day you arrive in Lhasa).

More detailed information about the Lingka Festival tour itinerary and introduction has been sent to you by email. Please kindly check your inbox. Thank you very much.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April

Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.

Dear Shek, Thank you for reaching out and we are here to help. For Hong Kong residents that want to travel to Tibet, a Tibet Travel permit is not required, as long as you have the HKSAR passport, as well as the Home Return Permit (HRP). Officially known as the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, the HRP can be issued to Chinese nationals that are permanent residents of Hong Kong in order to enter mainland China. Cheers!

Is Kailash Mansarovar Trip open for Indian Passport Holder?

Is it open for Indian Passport Holder?

Jun 20, 2024 2:30
Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Nayak, Thank you for reaching out! We're here to help. Well, for Indian passport holders who plan to visit Mt. Kailash, you have to book your Tibet tour with a licensed Nepali or Indian travel agency that is authorized by the Foreign Affairs Office of TAR or Pilgrim Center (also known as Tibet-India Pilgrim Reception Center) to get your Tibet Travel Permit and run your Tibet tour. If you are an Indian origin who lives outside of India and have another passport, let's say a US or Canadian passport, in this case, we can help you get the Tibet Travel Permit and other travel documents and arrange the Mt. Kailash tours for you.
