Must-visit Monasteries in Ngari
Tibetan Buddhism is the living breath of the plateau—a spiritual current woven into every corner of this sacred land, from the vibrant temple courtyards of Lhasa to the quietest hamlets along Tibet's western frontier. Even in Ngari, where the Gangdise and Himalayan ranges rise above windswept plateaus and endless horizons, ancient monasteries stand steadfast. Silent witnesses to centuries of devotion, they anchor faith within one of Earth's most awe-inspiring landscapes.
Tholing Monastery: The Cradle of Ngari's Culture
The must-see highlight of the Tholing Monastery here is the collection of surviving murals within the main assembly hall. Though faded, these paintings are artistic treasures that showcase a unique fusion of Kashmiri, Indian, and early Tibetan styles. Look closely at the graceful depictions of celestial beings and mandalas; they serve as a direct visual link to a glorious, bygone era. A visit to the Tholing Monastery sets the stage for everything that follows in Ngari. Conveniently, the fascinating ancient caves of the Dongga and Piyang ruins are located relatively nearby, allowing you to see the mural art tradition that Tholing helped inspire.

Korjak Monastery: A Masterpiece of Himalayan Art
Nestled in the peaceful village of Korjak near the Nepali border, this monastery is celebrated for housing some of the most exquisite and well-preserved sculptures in all of Tibet. The journey to Korjak itself, through dramatic desert landscapes and along the Sutlej River, is an unforgettable part of the experience. The absolute must-see reason to visit is the monastery's sacred silver statue of the Buddha Vairochana. This magnificent life-sized statue, along with other beautifully crafted figures of Avalokiteshvara and Maitreya, represents the zenith of Himalayan metalwork. The level of detail and spiritual presence in these centuries-old sculptures is genuinely moving. Korjak's architecture also tells a story, with its main hall blending Tibetan and Nepali design elements, reflecting the cross-cultural exchange of the ancient Guge period. After absorbing Korjak Monastery's artistic serenity, many travelers continue their journey to witness the breathtaking natural spectacle of Lake Manasarovar, one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world and a revered pilgrimage site, completing a day of both cultural and natural awe.

Drirapuk Monastery: Face to Face with the Divine
Continuing the Mount Kailash kora to the north side, you will encounter Drirapuk Monastery. Situated directly opposite the colossal north face of Mount Kailash, Drirapuk offers the most iconic and close-up view of the sacred mountain's icy, vertical cliffs. This proximity is what makes Drirapuk an unforgettable stop. The primary reason to visit is for that unparalleled, face-to-face encounter with Kailash. Waking up at Drirapuk guesthouse to the first light of dawn painting the mountain's summit in golden hues is a spiritual experience cherished by pilgrims and trekkers alike. After the arduous trek over the Drolma La pass, the journey continues toward the completion of the circuit, often connecting with a visit to the holy waters of Lake Manasarovar or the healing springs at Tirthapuri, both powerful sites to conclude a profound journey of body and spirit.

Dzultripuk Monastery: The Gateway to Mount Kailash Pilgrimage
Dzultripuk Monastery holds a special place in the hearts of pilgrims, and its must-see reason is its role as the official starting point of the Mount Kailash circumambulation—a sacred journey that draws travelers from all over the world seeking spiritual renewal. Its biggest feature is the sacred meditation cave of Guru Rinpoche, the legendary master who brought Tibetan Buddhism to Tibet; the cave, located below the monastery, is adorned with ancient murals and prayer flags, and it's believed that meditating here brings blessings and spiritual insight. The monastery itself is perched on a hillside with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains, creating a serene and reverent atmosphere that sets the tone for the circumambulation ahead. The sacred Lake Manasarovar and Lake Rakshastal are also nearby, which enables you to embrace the pilgrimage experience.
Conclusion
Whether you're a pilgrimage traveler, a history enthusiast, or someone who loves blending culture with nature, these monasteries will show you the soul of Ngari.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
