South-east of Lhasa is the Yarlung Valley, the birthplace of Tibetan civilization. This was the region of Tibet's earliest kings, long before the rise of Lhasa. At an elevation of around 3,500 meters, the air is milder and easier to breathe.
Yumbulakang Palace, perched on a hilltop, is believed to be one of Tibet's oldest structures. Nearby, Trandruk Monastery is among Tibet's earliest Buddhist temples. The true highlight is Samye Monastery, Tibet's first official Buddhist monastery, designed as a giant mandala representing the Buddhist universe.
