The Large Temperature Difference between Day and Night Makes it Necessary to Wear Multiple Layers
No matter what season it is, even the hottest summer is no exception. I always tell my customers to wear clothes that are easy to put on and take off. In this way, it is convenient to take off clothes when it is hot during the day and add clothes when it is cold at night. All of this is due to the fact that being at the world's highest plateau brings thin air and few clouds, so the solar radiation is strong during the day and the ground warms up rapidly. Once night falls, the atmospheric insulation effect is weak and heat loss is rapid. The temperature drop caused by the high altitudes becomes even more pronounced.
The Dry Season and the Rainy Season Are Distinct in Tibet
The dry season usually lasts from October to April of the following year, covering autumn, winter and early spring. The rainy season starts from May to September, but the rainfall is mainly concentrated from mid-June to late August, namely the summer. For tourists who have high requirements for the trekking experience, it is recommended to visit from April to May or from September to October to obtain the best experience.
The Sunlight Is Intense throughout the Year, Especially in Summer
Even when visiting Tibet in winter, the importance of sun protection must not be overlooked. Tibet has a high altitude, and the weakening effect of the atmosphere on solar radiation is rather small. The duration of sunlight tends to be long and the intensity is always high, especially in summer. The effect of physical sun protection is greater than that of chemical sun protection. Try to wear long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses when going out.
Be Cautious of Strong Winds When Traveling to High-Altitude Areas and Mountain Passes
Extra caution against the wind is required when traveling to the following areas: Ngari Prefecture, Nagqu Prefecture, Dromala Pass, Gangbala Pass, Gawula Pass, and Namtso Lake. In these areas, the frequency of strong winds is higher than in other places either because of the open terrain or due to the slit effect. When choosing a down jacket or a windproof jacket, the windproof effect should also be one of the considerations. According to the seasonal pattern, the wind force is the strongest in spring and winter throughout the year.
The Overall Temperature in Tibet throughout the Year Is Relatively Low, with a Small Annual Temperature Difference
The average daily temperature in summer ranges from 8℃ to 23℃. There is no scorching summer here; instead, it is a summer resort. Despite this, there is a freezing cold winter here. From November to February is the winter in Tibet and also the off-season for local tourism.
The Temperature Varies among Different Areas in Tibet
Because the terrain of Tibet is higher in the northwest and lower in the southeast, the annual average temperature decreases from southeast to northwest. The regions with relatively warm climates are Nyingchi and Chamdo, followed by Lhasa and Shigatse. These regions with warm climates are also the preferred areas for those who want to visit Tibet in winter. The average altitude of Ngari Prefecture exceeds 4,500 meters, and it is particularly cold in winter. Therefore, it is generally not advisable to visit during winter.
Conclusion
Finally, altitude sickness is more likely to occur when the weather is dry and the temperature is low. However, as long as proper cold protection and hydration are taken, there is no need to worry about the problem.
