Reopening of Zhangmu Port Eases Travel between Nepal and Tibet in 2026
Did you catch the news? Zhangmu Port has been reopened since 2025! This historic overland gateway between Kathmandu and Tibet has long been a favorite for its short distance and unique border charm, and its return makes cross-border travel between the two destinations easier than ever before. No longer limited to a single overland option, you now have one more choice that caters to different travel styles.
Zhangmu Port is nestled in Zhangmu Town, Nyalam County, Shigatse Prefecture, in southwest Tibet. Perched in a lush valley at around 2,300 meters above sea level, its lower altitude is a nice bonus for travelers adjusting to high elevations before heading deeper into Tibet. One of its biggest draws is its proximity to Kathmandu: the port is just 120 kilometers from Nepal's capital, with a drive time of 3 to 4 hours along the iconic Sino-Nepal Friendship Highway. This is significantly shorter than other border routes, making it a time-saver for busy travelers. Getting to Zhangmu Port from Kathmandu is straightforward—you can hire a private jeep from your downtown hotel for comfort and flexibility, or take a local bus from Jadibuti Bus Park for a more budget-friendly option. The port itself operates with clear opening hours: 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:30 to 18:00, so planning your crossing time in advance helps avoid delays. Beyond practicality, Zhangmu Town exudes a nostalgic border vibe, with Tibetan-style shops and Nepalese specialty stores lining the streets, offering a taste of cross-cultural charm that's hard to find elsewhere.

Zhangmu Port vs. Gyirong Port: Which Is More Suitable for You?
While Zhangmu Port's reopening is a game-changer, Gyirong Port remains the most established and popular overland gateway for travelers between Nepal and Tibet—and understanding their differences is key to choosing the best option. Gyirong Port stands out for its modern facilities and reliable operations: it boasts a well-equipped customs hall, streamlined inspection processes, and most staff speak basic English, which greatly reduces communication stress for international travelers. Its transportation connections within Tibet are excellent too, linking directly to National Highway G318 and G219. If your itinerary includes Everest Base Camp, Gyirong is particularly convenient—it's just a 4 to 5-hour drive to Tingri County and then on to EBC, creating a seamless travel flow. The surrounding Gyirong Town is a modern tourist hub with quality hotels, local restaurants, and visitor centers, providing stable accommodation and dining options. You can even extend your stay here to explore nearby attractions like Gyirong Valley and Naicun Village, blending border crossing with local sightseeing. However, Gyirong has a few drawbacks: the drive from Kathmandu takes 6 to 7 hours, 2 to 3 hours longer than Zhangmu, and some sections of the road still require careful navigation. Additionally, its more commercial atmosphere means it lacks the retro, authentic charm of Zhangmu.

Zhangmu Port, by contrast, is appealing with its short travel time and nostalgic appeal. The 3 to 4-hour drive from Kathmandu lets you reach Tibet faster, making it ideal for travelers who want to minimize time on the road. Zhangmu Town's traditional border feel, with its steep, winding streets and mix of Tibetan and Nepalese influences, offers a unique cultural experience that feels more off-the-beaten-path. However, it's important to note that Zhangmu's infrastructure, while renovated after the 2015 earthquake, is still not as modern as Gyirong's.

Conclusion
On the Chinese side, officials will check your passport, Chinese group visa, and Tibet Travel Permit. With everything in order, you'll be welcomed into Tibet. Our team can assist you in securing those essential permits, saving you time and avoiding any delay.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
