Reting Monastery: Full of Ancient Buddhism and Natural Beauty
Nestled in a serene valley about 160km far from Lhasa, Reting Monastery is a journey into the soul of Tibetan Buddhism. Founded in 1057 by Dromtonpa, a disciple of the revered sage Atisha, this monastery served as the cradle of the Kadam tradition, which later evolved into the Gelug school. Unlike Lhasa's bustling temples, Reting Monastery offers a tranquil escape where spirituality intertwines with breathtaking nature. For travelers seeking authenticity, this hidden gem is a must-visit.

A Walk Through History: Reting's Spiritual Roots
Founded in 1056 by Dromtonpa, a close disciple of the Indian master Atisha, Reting Monastery is older than Lhasa's famous three monasteries (Ganden, Drepung, Sera) by over 350 years. Originally a key center of the Kadampa school, it later became a cornerstone of Tibetan Buddhism's Gelug school (founded by Tsongkhapa in the 14th century). Locals love sharing the legend: when the monastery was first built, it had only 2 pillars. Then 108 fairies descended from heaven, turning into more pillars to help expand it. Today, 108 ancient cypresses in the nearby forest are said to be those fairies—touch one, and you might just feel their blessing.
The main building, Tsokchen Hall, is a masterpiece of Tibetan architecture. Its stone walls hold two layers: the inner layer lines shelves with the Kangyur and Tengyur (Tibetan Buddhist scriptures), while the outer layer keeps out the cold. Inside, golden statues of Buddha, Atisha, and Dromtonpa shine, and murals tell stories of Buddhist saints—painted with mineral pigments that still pop after centuries.

Nature's Embrace: Forest, Wetlands & Sacred Water
Reting Monastery sits inside Reting National Forest, a 7,643-hectare haven at 4,200m above sea level. 280,000 ancient cypresses—some over 1,000 years old, 30m tall, and so thick you need two people to hug them. Walking among these sacred trees is like stepping into a living temple; the air is fresh with negative ions, which eases mild altitude sickness. Nearby, Reting Wetland is a paradise for birdwatchers: black-necked cranes winter here from November to March. In the summer, the scene transforms as yaks come to graze.

Conclusion
Wondering how best to visit the legendary Reting Monastery? The answer lies in a private customized Tibet tour. Given the monastery's relatively remote location, a private tour transforms the scenic drive through the countryside from a logistical challenge into a highlight. This format grants you the freedom to deeply engage with this sacred site. We specialize in creating seamless, personalized itineraries that connect you authentically with Tibet's spiritual heritage.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
