Top Historical Sites to See in Tibet
When it comes to historical sites in Tibet, the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Tashilhunpo Monastery often spring to mind first. However, Tibet has much more to offer than these well-known landmarks. In this article, I will introduce you to some lesser-known yet equally historically-rich sites. These places generally retain their original, ancient appearances, untouched by modern reconstruction, allowing you to immerse yourself in a more authentic historical experience.
Guge Kingdom
The Guge Kingdom is an ancient lost kingdom located in Ngari Prefecture, western Tibet. It was established in the 10th century and thrived for around 700 years before its sudden decline. The ruins of the Guge Kingdom, which are about 18 kilometers from present-day Zanda County, are perched on a mountain, stretching from the foot to the peak, about 300 meters high. There are numerous mud - colored buildings and caves everywhere. The red and white temples stand out against the earth - colored backdrop. The murals in the temples are incredibly well - preserved, depicting various aspects of life, religion, and history in the kingdom, providing precious insights into the past.

Piyang and Dongga Grottoes Site
Situated in the Ngari region, the Piyang and Dongga Grottoes Site is the largest Buddhist grotto site ever discovered in Tibet. The murals in these grottoes are over a thousand years old and are of high archaeological and research value. Painted with special mineral pigments, they remain vivid and have not faded over time. The themes of the murals are diverse, mainly including Buddha images, Bodhisattva images, and stories of Buddha's life, presenting the glorious Buddhist art and cultural exchange in ancient Tibet.

Xiangzi Fortress Ruins
The Xiangzi Fortress Ruins are located in Xiangzi Township, about 60 kilometers north of Zanda County. In the past, Xiangzi was an important satellite city of the Guge Kingdom. The ruins, with a total area of about 10,000 square meters, are distributed on the mountainside and the mountaintop. There are temples, castles, and cave-dwelling ruins. Standing on the ruins, you can still feel the strategic importance of this place in ancient times. The well-preserved caves and the remaining walls seem to be telling stories of prosperity and battles in the past. The site also contains some delicate murals, adding to its cultural and historical value.

Conclusion
These historical sites in Tibet are like hidden pearls, waiting for you to discover their beauty and mystery. If you are interested in history, culture, and unique travel experiences, these sites should definitely be on your bucket list. Plan your trip to Tibet now and let these historical sites amaze you!

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
