Key Taboos to Be Mindful of at Tibetan Festivals
Tibet is a land of celebration, with festivals happening all year round. In spring, the Saga Dawa Festival honors Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and passing, with devotees circumambulating and praying. Summer brings the Shoton Festival, featuring yogurt tasting and operatic performances, while the Tashilhunpo Monastery's Buddha Unfolding Ceremony showcases a massive Buddha thangka. Autumn highlights the Ongkor Festival, where farmers express gratitude for harvests with monks' participation. The winter Tibetan New Year is a grand celebration with unique rituals and customs. With so many incredible ones to experience, why not take a few minutes to prepare so you can dive in confidently?
Ritual Participation Taboos
Thangka Unveiling Ceremonies: During events like the Shoton Festival, avoid touching or crossing the Buddha thangka, and don't push in when monks are displaying it. Stand in designated areas and check if photography is allowed. If unsure, ask your guide.
Circumambulation and Prayer: When joining in prayer activities, always move clockwise. Respect the sanctity of prayer wheels, prayer flags, and mani stones by not stepping on them. Avoid eating, talking loudly, or stopping on prayer paths. Follow the locals' lead and maintain a quiet, respectful demeanor.

Behavior Taboos
Photography Etiquette: Always seek permission before photographing monks. Avoid using flash when shooting inside temples, as it may damage murals. Respect requests to stop taking photos.
Respectful Conduct: Refrain from making inappropriate remarks about Tibetan Buddhism or its practices. Avoid public displays of affection and keep conversations away from sensitive topics like religion and politics.

Dress Code Taboos
Temple Visits: Dress modestly when entering temples. Cover your shoulders and knees, and remove hats and sunglasses. Carry a light jacket to adhere to the dress code while staying comfortable in Tibet's variable climate.
Festival Attendance: Opt for modest, respectful attire that blends with the local culture. This shows reverence for traditions and enhances your acceptance within the community.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
