Although each foreign tourist's itinerary within Tibet needs to be arranged by a qualified local travel agency, like ours, foreign tourists can freely choose and purchase their own preferred flights to enter Tibet. However, there is a very important prerequisite: only with Tibet Travel Permit, Chinese visa, and valid passport, they are allowed to board the plane. This article is dedicated to helping some international tourists who are new to Tibet understand some in-depth information about Tibet tours.
From Which Cities Can You Take a Direct Flight to Tibet?
Take Lhasa as the Starting Point of Your Tibet Trip
Lhasa, as the local economic center, has a well-developed transportation system, which has the highest frequency of flights to and from other cities. For this reason, many group tour packages also start and end in Lhasa, making it convenient for all tourists to arrive in and leave Tibet. Major gateway cities in China such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi’an, Kunming and Xining have non-stop direct flights to Lhasa every day throughout the whole year. At present, the only non-stop international direct flights to Lhasa are from Kathmandu.
Take Nyingchi as the Starting Point of Your Tibet Trip
Although the transportation in Nyingchi is not as developed as that in Lhasa, it has the advantage of a lower altitude than Lhasa. Moreover, during the Nyingchi Peach Blossom Festival every spring, Nyingchi becomes particularly popular. Therefore, it is still a good Tibet entry city. Currently, there are direct non-stop flights from Chengdu, Beijing and Xi'an to Nyingchi every day, and there are also one or two direct flights from Chongqing every week.
Take Shigatse and Ngari as the Starting Point of Your Tibet Trip
There are indeed some tourists who take Shigatse and Ngari Prefecture as their starting points, but they usually do so for private customized Tibet tours. Moreover, such tourists are generally experienced visitors who have visited Tibet many times. It is not recommended for any first-time visitor to Tibet to do so. There are direct flights from Chengdu to Shigatse without any stops. However, if you fly to Ngari Prefecture, you need to make a stopover.
Can You Book a Flight to Tibet Independently?
Since our Tibet travel package does not include major transportation to and from Tibet, our customers have the full freedom to choose the transportation mode they come to Tibet or leave it. It should be noted, however, that the passport used for purchasing the flight to Tibet must be the same as the one used for applying for Tibet Travel Permit.
How Far in Advance Is It Better to Book a Plane Ticket to Tibet?
The prerequisite for purchasing tickets is that you already determine the date of your entry into Tibet and also make sure that this date will not be temporarily unable to travel due to certain policies or weather conditions. Since the date of your arrival in Lhasa will be reflected in your Tibet Travel permit, your exact date needs to be consistent with this. Generally speaking, it is recommended to apply for Tibet Travel Permit about one month in advance. Around this time, you can purchase the air ticket to Tibet.
