Tibet Travel FAQs in 2025
Drawing from the most frequently asked questions by international travelers, our team of seasoned travel consultants has meticulously curated this comprehensive guide to Tibet. By compiling these FAQs, we aim to empower travelers with essential information, ensuring a well - informed, respectful, and unforgettable journey through the enchanting landscapes and rich culture of Tibet.
Who Needs to Apply for the Tibet Travel Permit before Traveling to Tibet?
To travel to Tibet, foreign tourists, who hold passports other than Chinese ones, and Taiwan compatriots are required to obtain the Tibet Travel Permit. However, visitors from Hong Kong and Macau can enter Tibet without Tibet Travel Permit; they just need their Home Return Permit. If you are a diplomat, journalist, or government official, only the Tibet Foreign Affairs Office can process your permit application. For Indian tourists planning to visit the Ngari region, our travel agency is unable to handle the application. They must go through a Nepali or Indian travel agency that has cooperation with the Foreign Affairs Office of the Tibet Autonomous Region or the Pilgrim Center.

Can You Provide the Service of Handling the Tibet Travel Permit Separately?
According to current Chinese regulations, no travel agency is authorized to offer foreign tourists the service of purchasing the Tibet Travel Permit (also known as the "Tibet Entry Permit") independently. This permit is not available for individual acquisition; instead, foreign travelers must book a comprehensive Tibet travel package through a licensed travel agency. Once a package is confirmed, the agency will assist in applying for the permit on the traveler's behalf, streamlining the process while ensuring compliance with official policies. Any online services claiming to handle the Tibet Travel Permit separately are fraudulent. These illegal offers not only violate Chinese regulations but also pose significant risks to travelers, potentially leading to denied entry or legal issues.
Who Is Not Suitable for Entering Tibet? Is There n Age Limit for Entering Tibet?
Not everyone is fit for a Tibet trip. Those with severe hypertension, heart disease, asthma, and pregnant women are advised against it. People with unresolved colds should postpone travel to prevent pulmonary edema. There's no strict age limit, and anyone can apply for a Tibet Travel Permit. However, we don't recommend children under 6 due to health concerns. For seniors over 70, it depends on their physical condition, and they need to sign a liability waiver with our agency before traveling.

Can I Freely Choose a Hotel to Stay in Tibet?
When traveling in Tibet, foreign tourists must stay at hotels with foreign - related qualifications as these are the only ones legally permitted to accommodate international guests. Such hotels also offer English-speaking services. In Lhasa and Shigatse, you'll find diverse options, from budget - friendly to luxury star-rated hotels. Our travel agency can assist with hotel arrangements. However, in remote areas like Ngari and at the Everest Base Camp, accommodation is more limited and basic, though they still ensure warmth and comfort for your stay.
What Are the Famous Religious Festivals in Tibet? Can I Participate in Them?
Tibet hosts vibrant religious festivals like the Tibetan New Year (usually Feb - Mar), the Saga Dawa Festival (May - Jun), and the Shoton Festival (Aug). Tibetan people warmly welcome foreign tourists to join and share the joy. Note that applying for a Tibet Travel Permit can be tricky in March. But our travel agency will do our best to assist, as policies vary annually. The Saga Dawa Festival is perfect for kora around mountains and lakes, while the Shoton Festival features spectacular Tibetan opera and delicious yogurt feasts.
Is It Convenient to Exchange Currency When Traveling in Tibet?
Yes, it is quite convenient to exchange currency when traveling in Tibet. In major cities like Lhasa and Shigatse, you will find numerous banks and ATMs that offer currency exchange services. Additionally, the airport and some large hotels also provide foreign currency exchange options. For shopping and dining, most merchants widely accept WeChat and Alipay, so it's a good idea to register for these payment platforms. However, in remote areas, it's advisable to carry sufficient cash in RMB to ensure a smooth experience.

Is the Network Signal Good in Tibet?
In cities such as Lhasa and Shigatse and major scenic spots, the network signal is relatively good, and 4G and even 5G networks are basically covered. But in remote mountainous areas, border areas, and during the pilgrimage, the network signal may be relatively weak or there may be no signal.
I Can't Speak Chinese or Tibetan. Will I Have Trouble Communicating in Tibet?
Don't worry if you can't speak Chinese or Tibetan. As you'll be staying at foreign-related hotels, the staff there are proficient in English, ensuring smooth communication for your accommodation needs. In major cities like Lhasa and Shigatse, many restaurant and scenic area staff also understand basic English phrases, which will facilitate your dining and sightseeing experiences. Moreover, our travel agency assigns English-speaking Tibetan locals as your tour guides. They will accompany you throughout the journey, helping to bridge any language gaps and providing in-depth cultural insights. To further prepare, you can download translation apps like Google Translate in advance. These apps can be handy in unexpected situations, ensuring you're well-equipped to handle any communication challenges during your trip to Tibet.
Conclusion
If you have any personal questions about your Tibet trip, feel free to come and ask for help anytime.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
