Universal Documents Required to Go Anywhere within Tibet
No matter where you visit in Tibet, including Shigatse, Tibet Travel Permit is the key document to allow for your entrance into Tibet. Before applying for the Tibet Travel Permit, you need to take into account the Chinese visa. Generally speaking, it is more recommended to apply for a tourist visa because other types of visas require the provision of corresponding proof. If you want to enter Tibet from Nepal, you can only do so through a Chinese group visa. If you come from a country where China offers visa-free access, you can skip the step of applying for a Chinese visa and directly apply for the Tibet Travel Permit through a registered Chinese travel agency. Of course, it is impossible to apply for a Chinese visa without a passport, so a valid passport is also indispensable.
Since entering Tibet from Nepal is rather special, you should first apply for a Tibet Travel Permit through a reliable Chinese travel agency and then head to Kathmandu. After submitting your original passport, the travel agency will apply for a Chinese group visa on your behalf.
If you want to go to Tibet from other destinations, you must first have a Chinese visa before you can apply for a Tibet Travel Permit. This sequence is different and also requires attention.
The processing time for a Chinese visa is generally 3 to 5 days, but the processing time for a Tibet Travel Permit is at least 8 to 9 working days. So, as long as your itinerary includes Tibet, it is the most basic requirement to prepare your documents in advance.
Extra Documents Required to Visit Shigatse
If your itinerary is limited to Lhasa, then you are alright with just the Tibet Travel Permit, Chinese visa and passport. Once the itinerary extends beyond Lhasa, an additional document is required, which is the Aliens' Travel Permit. It is a much simpler process compared to all the documents mentioned above. First of all, the cost of this document is already included in the travel package, so you don't need to pay any more. Then, it is your guide who will lead you to the office of the Public Security Bureau in Lhasa to handle it, and the process generally takes 1 to 2 hours.
Aliens' Travel Permit can now qualify you for sightseeing in the urban area of Shigatse. When the itinerary involves the Everest Base Camp, the new additional document, Border Pass, becomes mandatory again. This document is aimed at all tourists, both domestic and foreign. Similarly, the cost of this document is already included in the travel package, and the application process is the same as that for an Aliens' Travel Permit. Besides, when your trekking route exceeds 6,000 meters, a trekking permit is also necessary. Everest Climbing Permit is also required for a climbing tour to Mount Everest.
