How to travel from Nyingchi to Everest Base Camp

Jan 12, 2026 11:08 By lewis

Choosing Nyingchi (2,800m) as the starting point of your Tibet adventure is a wise decision, especially for first-time visitors to the plateau. Additionally, getting to Nyingchi is incredibly convenient: Nyingchi Mainling Airport operates more than 10 daily flights connecting to Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi'an and other cities, with a flight time of only 2 hours from Chengdu and 35 minutes from Lhasa. If you prefer train travel, the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway (Lalin Railway) offers a comfortable ride, taking just 3 hours and 29 minutes to reach Nyingchi from Lhasa. More conveniently, our Tibet travel agency has tailored this mature route from Nyingchi to Everest Base Camp and back to Lhasa, taking care of all the tedious details.

How to travel from Nyingchi to Everest Base Camp

Nyingchi's peach blossom festival is a must-see highlight for travelers. Held annually in April and lasting for a month, the festival kicks off at Gala Peach Blossom Village, where you can wander through acres of wild peach forests. From Gala Peach Blossom Village, the 150-kilometer journey (about 3 hours) to Lulang Forest Sea by car takes you through Sejila Pass, where you might catch a glimpse of the majestic Namcha Barwa Peak on a clear day. In the evening, you can stay in a cozy homestay in Zhaxigang Village under the snow-capped mountains, experience local Tibetan culture through archery activities, and savor an authentic Gongbu Tibetan family dinner. The next day, you can head to Bomi Peach Blossom Valley, the largest wild peach forest in the world, before exploring Gangyun Spruce Forest and enjoying a relaxing hike through the primeval forest. A leisurely forest afternoon tea will be prepared for you to unwind amidst the fresh mountain air. On the third day, after a morning hike in Gangyun Spruce Forest, you'll travel to Basum Tso Lake, stopping by Kadin Gorge Waterfall to admire the stunning canyon and waterfall scenery along the way. You'll have another chance to gaze at Namcha Barwa Peak during the journey, making these days full of natural surprises.

From Basum Tso to Lhasa: Embrace Tibetan Cultural Charm

The fourth day starts with a peaceful walk along the shores of Basum Tso Lake, where the morning mist floats over the water and the forest reflects on the lake surface, creating a serene atmosphere. After breakfast, you'll visit the central island of the lake with your guide, then take a boat to the Son-seeking Cave on the opposite shore of the hotel for a one-hour walk along the quiet lakeside path. In the afternoon, you'll embark on the journey to Lhasa, which is a 350-kilometer journey taking about 4 hours. Once in Lhasa, you'll have a full day to immerse yourself in Tibetan culture: visit the iconic Potala Palace and join Tibetan folk activities in the local park at the foot of the palace. Later, explore Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street, where you can sip butter tea in a Tibetan teahouse and experience the authentic Tibetan social culture. The butter tea here is rich and fragrant, and chatting with local Tibetans while drinking it will make you feel more connected to this land.

Heading to Everest Base Camp: Chase the Peak of the World

After soaking up the cultural charm of Lhasa, you'll set off for Shigatse, a 360-kilometer drive taking about 8 hours. Along the way, you'll pass Yamdrok Tso Lake, a stunning alpine lake with crystal-clear blue water. You'll visit a local farmer's family by the lake and enjoy a homemade farm lunch there. you'll also stop at Karola Glacier and the highland barley fields in Gyantse, where you can see the golden waves of barley dancing in the wind. The next day, we'll travel from Shigatse to Everest Base Camp, covering 340 kilometers in about 8 hours, with the altitude rising from 3600 meters to 5200 meters. You'll stop at Tingri Viewpoint and Gawula Viewpoint to admire the magnificent views of Mount Everest and the surrounding Himalayan mountain range, and you'll have the chance to watch the beautiful sunset over Everest. You'll stay in a tent guesthouse at Everest Base Camp, where you can feel the grandeur of the world's highest peak up close. Early the next morning, don't miss the breathtaking sunrise over Mount Everest— the golden light covering the snow-capped peak is a sight you'll never forget. We'll then visit Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world, before heading back to Shigatse via Dingjie County and Sakya County, stopping at Himalayan Lhotse Observation Deck to enjoy the majestic views of the east face of Everest and Lhotse Peak.

Return to Lhasa and Conclude the Journey

On the ninth day, you'll visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, the largest monastery in western Tibet, where you can appreciate the exquisite Tibetan Buddhist art and learn about the history and culture of the region. Afterward, you'll take a car or train along the Yarlung Zangbo River back to Lhasa, a 280-kilometer journey taking about 5 hours. The Yarlung Zangbo River, with its surging waters, adds another touch of natural beauty to your journey. On the tenth day, our team will arrange transportation from your hotel to the airport or railway station, bringing your unforgettable Tibet journey to an end. This route, carefully designed by our travel agency, connects the most beautiful natural scenery and cultural sites of Tibet, ensuring a safe, comfortable and memorable experience. Whether you're chasing the beauty of Nyingchi's peach blossoms, exploring the cultural treasures of Lhasa, or admiring the grandeur of Mount Everest, we'll be with you every step of the way to handle all the details, from applying for the Tibet travel permit to arranging accommodation and meals. All you need to do is relax and enjoy the unique charm of Tibet.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April

Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.

Dear Shek, Thank you for reaching out and we are here to help. For Hong Kong residents that want to travel to Tibet, a Tibet Travel permit is not required, as long as you have the HKSAR passport, as well as the Home Return Permit (HRP). Officially known as the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, the HRP can be issued to Chinese nationals that are permanent residents of Hong Kong in order to enter mainland China. Cheers!

Is it open for Indian Passport Holder?

Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Nayak, Thank you for reaching out! We're here to help. Well, for Indian passport holders who plan to visit Mt. Kailash, you have to book your Tibet tour with a licensed Nepali or Indian travel agency that is authorized by the Foreign Affairs Office of TAR or Pilgrim Center (also known as Tibet-India Pilgrim Reception Center) to get your Tibet Travel Permit and run your Tibet tour. If you are an Indian origin who lives outside of India and have another passport, let's say a US or Canadian passport, in this case, we can help you get the Tibet Travel Permit and other travel documents and arrange the Mt. Kailash tours for you.

The "Tibet Entry Permit" should be apply

I heard from my friend that says there is difference between the above mentioned are: "Individual Tibet Entry Permit" - Individual Entering Tibet is granted. "Group Tibet Entry Permit" - Anyone from the group is Absent, the whole group is deny entry. May I know which one is the correct facts?

Jun 15, 2024 11:12
Answered by Tibet Tour team

Tibet Travel Permit, the required travel document for entering Tibet Autonomous Region, has no distinction between individual and group. . What your friends might have mentioned is the Group Visa, specifically required for entry into Tibet from Nepal. You'll have to apply for the Group Visa at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu, and you'll need at least four people in your group. You'll all have to enter and leave Tibet together. But if you're entering Tibet from mainland China, you don't need this group thing. Our travel consultant will contact you with more details and help you arrange your trip to Tibet.
