Road Condition Comparison between EBC in Tibet and EBC in Nepal

Jun 25, 2026 5:32 By lewis

The northern slope of Mount Everest belongs to Tibet, China, while the southern slope belongs to Nepal. South slope is Influenced by the warm and humid air current from the Indian Ocean, there is abundant precipitation. The vertical landscape from forest to ice and snow is rich and diverse, with significant changes in scenery. North slope has deep in inland arid climate with mostly desert and alpine meadow and sparse vegetation. Overall, the northern slope places more emphasis on sightseeing, while the southern slope focuses more on the trekking experience. These two not only differ in terms of landscape and experience, but also in the ways and routes to get there.

How to Travel from Lhasa to EBC in Tibet

The road travel route from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp in Tibet couldn't be more classic, and the entire road is paved with asphalt.‌ Starting from Lhasa, you can reach Dingri County via National Highway G318, passing through Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier, Shigatse and Lhatse. Then, drive through the Qomolangma Road to the Qomolangma Scenic Area Environmental Protection Vehicle Transfer Center, and change to an environmental protection vehicle to head to the base camp area.

Road Condition Comparison between EBC in Tibet and EBC in Nepal

How to Travel from Kathmandu to EBC in Nepal

Currently, there are no roads to reach the Everest Base Camp area in Nepal; there are only trekking trails. Generally speaking, tourists usually fly from Kathmandu to Lukla Airport first and then embark on a walking journey of about 70 to 80 kilometers, which takes 7 to 14 days. The route passes through forests, rocky slopes, suspension Bridges and the edge of the Khumbu Glacier. Some sections are narrow and steep, and there is a risk of landslides during the rainy season. It is necessary to have good physical fitness, walk 5 to 10 kilometers every day, and reserve more than 3 days for high-altitude adaptation.

How should you choose between the south slope and the north slope of Mount Everest

For tourists who want to take a relatively relaxing trip, they can directly choose the base camp located on the northern slope of Mount Everest in Shigatse without any hesitation. The altitude of the Everest Base Camp here is approximately 5,200 meters. There are basic tourism facilities such as guesthouses and restaurants nearby, and even a few hotel-sized rooms to choose from. You can arrive here on the same day from the urban area of Shigatse, and it only takes two days from Lhasa. This excellent road condition enables tourists with limited time to benefit greatly from it. Even if you set off from the Gyirong Town on the China-Nepal border, you can still reach Tibetan Everest Base Camp on the same day. The shorter time it takes to reach the destination, the less fatigue there will be during the journey.

Road Condition Comparison between EBC in Tibet and EBC in Nepal

The Everest Base Camp located in Tibet is a year-round open attraction. It is only temporarily closed due to occasional extreme weather conditions, but most of the time it can still be visited even in winter. In contrast, in the Everest base camp area of Nepal, it rains frequently from June to early September. The roads are muddy and slippery, and the snow-capped mountain scenery is blocked by clouds and fog. There is also a risk of landslides and thunderstorms. Moreover, it can only be reached on foot, and personal safety cannot be reliably guaranteed.

If you are a  trekking enthusiast, Nepal would be more suitable for you. In the past two years, the restrictions on climbing Mount Everest from the northern slope have become stricter, and some famous trekking routes such as Gama Valley have been closed. On the Chinese side, it is stipulated that climbers must have a proof of reaching the summit of a mountain over 8,000 meters high. The review process is strict, and individual applications are not accepted for the time being. Only professional company teams can apply. Above 8,300 meters on the northern slope, the nearly vertical rock face is extremely difficult to climb in an oxygen-deficient environment. Although the southern slope requires crossing the dangerous Khumbu Glacier, the route is relatively gentle in the later stage. In addition, the climbing rescue conditions on the south slope are better and more mature.

Conclusion

The Everest base Camp areas on both sides each have their own unique features. Your choice should be based on your own preferences, time and budget.

Best time to travel for the Linka festival

Hey, I'm looking to travel to the Linka festival with my partner. When is the best time to go this year? Thanks!

Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Guest,

Hope you are having a wonderful day! I was delighted to receive your inquiry about experiencing a Tibetan "Linka" with your partner.

Welcome to Tibet Tour Team! With over 20 years of experience in Tibetan travel, we have helped thousands of international travelers explore the beauty and culture of this incredible region. It would be my great pleasure to introduce you and your wife to Tibet and the unique tradition of "Linka."

In Tibetan, "Linka" refers to a park, grassland, or wooded area, while "guo Linka" means spending time there—eating, drinking tea, singing, chatting, and relaxing. It’s a beloved weekend or festive activity among Tibetans.

You asked about the best time of year to experience Linka.Let me walk you through the following aspects:

1. Best Season & Why

Linka is all about leisurely relaxing in meadows or wooded areas under the sun. For this reason, July and August are highly recommended. During these months, the weather is pleasant, the scenery is stunning, and you can enjoy ample sunshine, fresh air, and brilliant blue skies—perfect for fully immersing in the refreshing high-altitude atmosphere.

Additionally, August hosts the Shoton Festival, one of Tibet’s most important traditional celebrations. Locals typically enjoy about a week of holiday, during which residents of Lhasa gather in parks like Norbulingka and Zongjiao Lukang to set up tents, enjoy yogurt, sing, dance, and celebrate Tibetan outdoor culture. You’ll even get to try special Tibetan yogurt, which is deliciously tangy and sweet—in fact, “Shoton” means “yogurt feast” in Tibetan!

2. Recommended Itinerary

Considering your interest in Linka and the recommendation above, I am eager to suggest our specially designed 10-Day Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake, Shigatse & Everest Linka Tour during Shoton Festival. This is a one-time-only departure timed perfectly with the festival. The departure date for this itinerary is August 10th (this is the day you arrive in Lhasa).

More detailed information about the Lingka Festival tour itinerary and introduction has been sent to you by email. Please kindly check your inbox. Thank you very much.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April

Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.

Dear Shek, Thank you for reaching out and we are here to help. For Hong Kong residents that want to travel to Tibet, a Tibet Travel permit is not required, as long as you have the HKSAR passport, as well as the Home Return Permit (HRP). Officially known as the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, the HRP can be issued to Chinese nationals that are permanent residents of Hong Kong in order to enter mainland China. Cheers!

Is it open for Indian Passport Holder?

Answered by Tibet Tour team

Dear Nayak, Thank you for reaching out! We're here to help. Well, for Indian passport holders who plan to visit Mt. Kailash, you have to book your Tibet tour with a licensed Nepali or Indian travel agency that is authorized by the Foreign Affairs Office of TAR or Pilgrim Center (also known as Tibet-India Pilgrim Reception Center) to get your Tibet Travel Permit and run your Tibet tour. If you are an Indian origin who lives outside of India and have another passport, let's say a US or Canadian passport, in this case, we can help you get the Tibet Travel Permit and other travel documents and arrange the Mt. Kailash tours for you.
