Popular Bird Watching Attractions in Tibet
For birdwatching enthusiasts, Tibet is a paradise filled with surprises. With its unique geographical environment and rich ecosystem, Tibet provides a habitat for a wide variety of bird species. Here are some of the most popular birdwatching spots in Tibet that should not be missed.
Namtso Lake
Located in central Tibet, about 200 kilometers from Lhasa, Namtso Lake is one of the highest large lakes in the world. With its crystal-clear waters and expansive grasslands and wetlands along the shoreline, it offers an ideal habitat for birds. The lake's stunning scenery, set against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains, creates a breathtaking backdrop for birdwatching.
Visitors can spot a variety of birds such as bar-headed geese, ruddy shelducks, and brown-headed gulls. During the spring and summer, numerous migratory birds come here to breed. You can see flocks of birds flying or swimming on the lake, creating a harmonious picture with the surrounding natural beauty.

Yamdrok Lake
About 100 kilometers from Lhasa, in Lhokha City's Lhunzhub County, lies Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet's three holy lakes. Its azure waters and winding shoreline are surrounded by lush vegetation, providing an excellent habitat for birds. The lake's picturesque scenery, with its clear waters and surrounding mountains, makes it a perfect spot for photography and sightseeing.
Bird species commonly seen here include ruddy shelducks, gray ducks, common pochards, and brown-headed gulls. These birds can often be observed swimming on the lake or foraging along the shore, adding vitality to the tranquil lakeside.
Lalu Wetland National Nature Reserve
Located in the heart of Lhasa, north of the Potala Palace, Lalu Wetland sits at an altitude of 3,648 meters and is known as the "Lungs of Lhasa." It is the only wetland within an urban area where plateau waterbirds can be observed. The reed beds and the Potala Palace in the background form a unique "sacred city bird shadow" landscape. While only peripheral observation is allowed, the birds here are not afraid of humans, making it easy to capture their lively moments.
Representative bird species include the common gallinule, bar-headed goose, brown-headed gull, and ruddy shelduck. During winter, the bird population can reach several thousand.
Zongjiaolukang Park
Situated in Lhasa's Chengguan District, behind the Potala Palace, Zongjiaolukang Park offers convenient access. It combines the relaxation of a city park with birdwatching opportunities. Before the lake freezes in winter, the bird density is highest, making it a great spot for both leisure and bird observation.
Common bird species here include the red-billed gull, bar-headed goose, ruddy shelduck, and spotted dove. Eurasian hoopoes can occasionally be seen foraging on the lawns.

Basumtso Ecological Reserve
Located in Basumtso Lake, Gongbo' Gyamda County, Nyingchi City (elevation 3,480 meters), this reserve is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and lakes, with high oxygen levels, making it ideal for capturing photos of birds and natural landscapes together.
Species like the black-necked crane, bar-headed goose, ruddy shelduck, and Tibetan snowcock can be found here.

plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April
Hi! I would like to plan a 7-8days trip for me and my boyfriend in April (3rd to 10th ideally) to Nepal, Tibet, and, if possible, Bhutan. Do you think it would be doable? Based on what I read, there are some places/things to do to consider: Nepal: Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit, ancient temples, sacred sites like Lumbini, Kathmandu, Tibet: The Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Jokhang Temple. eventually the holy Mount Kailash or the high-altitude plains. Bhutan: Thimphu, Paro, and the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. To take part in cultural traditions, yoga, meditation... Of course I am open to any recommendations you could make. For your reference, we are both based in Asia: him, in Bangkok and myself in Macau. Thank you so much for the information you could provide and, if possible, an estimated budget for your offer.
